Amnio at 35 weeks

Can anybody offer any reassurance or a handhold on our situation? We had a scan last week which showed some dilation in baby's bowel. Went for a second opinion and doctor confirmed this to be the case. Apparently Down Syndrome could cause this and they want me to go for an amnio to rule it out (or in). It could also be caused by Cystic Fibrosis although the 'most likely' is that it is just one of those things. I will be 35 weeks next week, so at least the amnio could 'only' cause early labour rather than miscarriage, but I am absolutely terrified of the procedure and of the result. We didn't have the screening at 12 weeks because I wouldn't have had an amnio then because of the risk of miscarriage and didn't feel that we could afford the Harmony or similar. Anomaly scan at 20 weeks was normal and scan last week showed no other markers. Baby is measuring large. Has anybody else been through anything like this? I'm feeling quite desperate at this late stage Sad.

Well since you are getting good news then maybe his new name is actually lucky!
I think when you see him you will know which name suits him. Wishing you lots of luck and best wishes to your little boy x

I'm really glad :) I hope you have a lovely birth - is it possible to try for a natural or does it have to be a section? And that the bowel problems are dealt with easily.

No names will be bad luck, just go for whichever suits him the best when he is here xx

So, for those following this story, an unexpected development: my waters broke this morning and baby was born by C-section today! He will need an operation, but the doctors were happy that he is stable and comfortable and are waiting til tomorrow. Fortunately he is a good size for 35 weeks: 6 lbs and 13 oz, and everyone seems hopeful that all will be well. He is absolutely beautiful.

Hi Primulas - wow, quite an update, I was only thinking about you today and wondering how it was going (we've been away). Congratulations on the arrival of your little one! Smile

Glad to see that the amnio experience was okay and you received the results quickly.

It is good to see that you got to 35 weeks. I start being monitored for polyhydramnios tomorrow and am hoping to keep him in as long as possible! The babies with bowel issues belonging to family friends of mine have arrived between 28 and 36 weeks.

I hope the surgery goes well. I'd be really interested to hear how you get on. If you don't mind me asking, did you have a c-section because of the bowel issue? When we mentioned delivery to our consultant he said a c-section is not necessary but we're a bit concerned about a potential lengthy labour and it being tiring/traumatic for the baby prior to surgery. Hopefully we will get to talk to our delivery consultant about our options soon.

Hope you are getting on well with your recovery and decided on a name :) xx

Lovely news, congratulations! Ds was born at 36 weeks and all fine, I hope the same is the case for you. When is he having surgery>

Primulas · 24/04/2017 10:16

Thank you all. Baby had his operation yesterday, which went well, but the surgeon was concerned about the size of the bowel loops and that they may have to go in again so he will be in for observation for at least three weeks. Birth was supposed to be an ELCS after an EMCS with my first, so it wasn't specifically because of the bowel issue. They didn't seem worried about getting him out quickly, but I must say I was glad in the end that I knew they would be looking after him so soon. I hope you have a useful meeting, Hazlulu, and that your little one stays in for as long as possible!

Just been reading your head now primulas - sounds like all a bit of a whirlwind! Congratulations on your lovely boy. Had to comment to say that and wow what a great weight for 35 weeks!! Hope things go smoothly for you all :-)

Surf25 · 25/04/2017 21:10

Sorry, thread not head! Autocorrect argh!

Hazlulu · 03/05/2017 20:25

Hi Primulas, hope you are both recovering okay? :) Thanks for letting me know that the CS wasn't specifically due to the bowel issue. Do they know yet whether your son will have to have the further surgery?

My appointment went well and the fluid had not increased beyond what they expect so I'm low-risk until mid-May when I next have to be scanned. They are hoping we can meet with the paediatric surgeon at our next check-up so it'll be good to start planning what will happen when the time comes!

Primulas · 03/05/2017 21:18

Thanks, Surf25! I was wondering how you were getting on, Hazlulu. Glad to hear it sounds like the situation is under control at the moment. Baby is still in the hospital, still waiting for him to show signs that he might accept some milk. I think until they can try that, they won't know how his bowel repair is holding up. Otherwise, he is doing well. He is very calm and settled. Still hoping that he won't need any further surgery and getting impatient to take him home.

Hi Primulas, how is everything going? Is your little one feeding and are you both home now?

I was rescanned today and my fluid hasn't increased so no polyhydramnios at the moment. We met with the surgeon who took us through what will happen when he is born and the different things that might be causing the obstructions ranging from a partial blockage, a blockage or a short bowel. I'm trying to have a glass half full approach (and also trying to resist the urge to google short bowels). We get to discuss delivery in three weeks time - I'm still hoping for a water birth but we'll see!

Primulas · 17/05/2017 23:04

Hi Hazlulu, glad to hear your fluid is under control at the moment! I remember the evenings of trying not to Google... Little one is still in hospital, but doing very well. He is now taking milk and tolerating it well. He is pooing well (!) so all seems to be working. They just need to get him up to accepting full feeds of milk and then we can take him home, but they don't want to do it too quickly in case it causes a further twist in his bowel. It's frustrating now because he is doing so well and I just want to take him home with us, but hopefully we are very close to the end. His bowel was very dilated above the blockage which is what has made it all so slow I think. I hope your little one will not be in for so long.

Little one has been home for a week now; he is doing well and we are very relieved to have him here with us finally and enjoying getting to know him. Hazlulu, how are you getting on?
