Greater than 9 in 10 risk of Down's Syndrome

Long time lurker posting for the first time for some insight and support following a meeting with a midwife yesterday. I was called into hospital yesterday to discuss my blood test results so I knew instantly that something must be wrong...

I've been told that following my 12 week scan and blood test that my results were sent for a reflex DNA test. The results of which indicate a greater than 9 in 10 risk of Down's Syndrome. I've searched online and not found any odds that high. I see people post ratios like 1:150 or 1:3 but nothing like 'greater than 9 in 10'. I keep telling myself it's a screening not an actual test but it's hard to have much hope that the outcome will be anything other than confirmation that I'm carrying a baby with Down's Syndrome.

I'm having an amnio test next week so will know either way in 10 days but I suppose I'm trying to get a better perspective of what the odds really are and how I'm going to be able to get through the next week or so.

Any experience or understanding would be much appreciated.

Yes I live in South East London. We didn't do a blood test, it was just the NHS bloods and NT measurement which is the screening, that gives the risk factor. We went straight to the CVS. Where did you have this done? Mine was at Harris Birthright at Kings.

Mine was in Royal London hospital in Whitechapel. Don't you think am risk ratio is too high? What's the differences between with 1:2 and greater than 9 in 10??

Thank you for you supposed sarahOoo?

SarahOoo · 13/12/2016 15:12

1:2 is 50% chance, 9 in 10 is 90%. But please remember it is a risk, when I went through this I scoured mumsnet threads and ultimately there are all kinds of odds, some with low odds like 1.2% and having a chromosomal disorder with others being higher and not having one at all, the screening is not an exact science but your amnio will be. Call them up as its been over a week now.

I didn't understand your last sentence... Can you rewrite? X

BanguraAmy · 13/12/2016 15:39

Ok thank you. My last sentence was a mistake I was just trying to say thanks for your caring.

I know this is much later, but I wonder if either DesperatelySeekingHope or BanguraAmy could share how did it go in the end. I am in the same situation, just got my amnio few days ago but really not believing in unicorns and now simply ponderating whether having a medical or surgical termination. Any info would be appreciated, but also I understand if you both don’t want to talk about it anymore.
