High NT result

Had my 12wk scan yesterday, which I was so nervous about. Baby wasn't playing ball and the sonographer couldn't get measurements so had to do an internal scan. Eventually, she managed to get a measurement - two were 3.4mm and the final one was 3.5mm. We where then taken for a chat and to have my bloods done. I've come away convinced that if its not Downs there is definitely someone wrong. It seems a high NT result rarely has a positive outcome. We're being referred - hopefully Friday but maybe Monday now. I can't sleep now and just don't know how I'm going to cope I we the next few weeks. I'm just thinking about the massive decision that I may have to make. I'm a mess and don't know anyone that's been through this. Would be good to hear your stories, positive and negative.

Hi, sorry you have this worry. I've just done a quick Google, and this certainly does not mean there will definitely be a problem. There are lots of stories out there of people who had a high NT measurement, and ended up with a healthy baby. I hope you get referred quickly, and all works out OK for you.

Hi herehare, I am almost the same as you so handholding if it helps.

Just had my 12wk scan this morning and our baby was the same - very fidgety and the sonographer struggled to get pictures, then called me back in to rescan - not internal, but still a worry as we could see the readings she was taking and had (perhaps unfortunately) already read up on what they might mean. Readings were coming up as 3.4 - 4.0, and the final 'official' reading was 3.8mm, which they said was borderline risky (apparently 3.5mm is the 'border') so I've been referred. I was taken straight from bloods to another clinic to speak to a midwife, who gave us some info and called the fetal consultant. We've both read loads already about the various potential problems (finding out as much as poss is how we personally deal with things best) and the consultant I spoke to was great. We decided to go for a CVS as we need to know asap rather than waiting and worrying, so I called the consultant back as soon as we got home and have been booked in for the CVS this Friday. We were told that the NT result means the bloods will be rushed through, so we should hopefully have that result early next week, and the consultant thought that some of the CVS results should also be available next week. It helps me to know that we should have at least some information, good or bad, within a few days, so maybe you could ask if they can give you a timescale, if that would help?

I can't offer any reassurance as such but if you want someone in the same boat to talk to, PM me. We've not told anyone other than our parents (due to a MMC earlier in the year) so not able (or really wanting) to talk it through with friends in real life.

The consultant I spoke to focused very much on the positive stats rather than the negative, and a lot of what we've read seems to do the same, which helps a little bit with the worry, but DH and I just want to get as definitive answers as possible asap so we can make whatever decisions might be necessary. Fingers crossed that the outcome is good for both you and us.

Hi op, really good advice from the above posters. I also had a 'borderline' NT result, I think the highest they measured was 3.6mm. With the blood results our overall probabability was that there was a 1 in 5 chance that our baby had a problem.

We opted for CVS because we wanted a quick result. The initial results came back in 3 days, and then we were finally given the all clear a week later. I'm not sure what your plans will be once you've spoken to the consultant, but in case you are considering the CVS route it wasn't half as bad as I was expecting and took less than 30 seconds. Obviously this is a very personal choice and you do have options.

A high NT reading doesn't automatically mean bad news. Some babies apparently just have slightly more fluid than others Smile

Got my fingers crossed for you and the above poster that you get good news x

Anecdote is not data but my NT was 4.6mm, and with high HCG and low PAPPA we had a 1 in 3 for Downs. I had an amnio and it was negative.

DS is now 3 and entirely normal (chromosomally at least!).

It can all be fine even with readings off the scale like mine x

Thanks for all your replies. It really does help to know that there's people to talk to. And Clarebells, sorry to hear you are going through the same thing. It's a nightmare. I've been on a company day all day and had to act all normal. The hospital called this afternoon and they are going to do another detailed scan first and then we'll have a talk through the options. I know I will go for cvs, so would also like this done asap but I guess this is likely to be towards the end of next week now. Perhaps I should have push for a cvs sooner too. Just got to get through the next few days...fingers crossed for your cvs fri Clarebells

Thanks herehare and September. Was saying to DH just a while ago that I wished with hindsight that they could have just done it straight away - it's the waiting for the test (even just 2 days), and then knowing we will have to wait more time for results that's hard. But when I first called, I was expecting to be offered a date sometime next week, at best!

I would definitely ask at your next scan about getting your CVS booked asap if that's what you want to do, or even just phone up tomorrow, they may be able to book you in for after your scan and cancel if it's not needed after all. We left it less than an hour from speaking to the consultant the first time before calling her back, and she was happy to book us in. The 'options' talk may actually be with a consultant as ours was, in which case if you're prepared and have made the decision to have a CVS, they may be able to make your appointment there and then (I wish I'd done this although prob wouldn't have been booked in any sooner, but I hadn't discussed CVS with DH at that point). They know how hard the waiting is and I have to say we have been really impressed with everyone we've dealt with - it's not a nice place to be, but they've made it as easy as possible.

Fingers crossed!
