These are my DS odds following NT. I will be 42 when baby arrives so I wasn't expecting a particularly high number, but this does seem to me worrying. Not worrying enough for the NHS to require amino. Can I 'demand' one? Or is Harmony test the only other option?

Thanks.

Grape ask to speak to the midwife in charge of screening at your hospital, if you explain you want the amnio and your reasons why they are very unlikely to refuse you.

TarkaTheOtter · 18/11/2013 13:25

Those are really good odds at 42. The average risk at 40 is 1/100 and at 45 is 1/30 according to the nhs.

The odds you have been given will have been calculated using information including your age so to get such low odds means your nt measurement and bloods must have been very low risk.

CrispyFB · 18/11/2013 13:45

I would say those are extremely good odds for your age and something to be happy about!

I'm pretty sure they don't count it as screen positive unless it's under 1 in 150, so I don't think you'd qualify for anything on the NHS. Unless you're at certain London-based hospitals, you wouldn't be able to get Harmony on the NHS just yet.

You are of course free to get something done privately whether amnio or Harmony. If I was in your situation I would go for Harmony but I am not personally a fan of invasive testing unless the situation looks pretty bad having heard of too many sad outcomes. However everybody has a different way of doing things and reaching decisions.

Thanks everyone. I've checked my last odds, which were 1 in 710, but that was 7 years ago so I think that you are all right about this being quite good given that I am so ancient!!
Might look at Harmony, but price is fairly steep, but then again, that could be the cost of peace of mind.

I'm 43 and the odds I was given were 1 in 125, which were pretty good for my age. So I would want to reassure you that your odds are very good indeed for a mere girl of 42.

I had a Harmony test and it came back 1 in 10,000, so if you are able to, I would consider having that test. I understand that anything past 1 in 150 is put into the low risk category, so your odds are certainly there. I'm just trying to say, please try to concentrate on that.

I wish you all the best, and congratulations!

The odds are pretty good, OP, but I think I'd go for Harmony, for peace of mind, as you say.

Unless you're at certain London-based hospitals, you wouldn't be able to get Harmony on the NHS just yet.

Are some London hospitals offering NHS testing now, Crispy? I've donated samples for research in London, but hadn't heard that there was anywhere using the test already.

Lagoonablue · 20/11/2013 07:01

Great odds. Not even high risk on nhs. Unless you would terminate why bother with another test?

CrispyFB · 20/11/2013 11:30

lostlove - I've heard that UCLH is going to start trialling it very soon, and I'd guess that Kings College would be too, given their direct connection with the research.

lostlove · 23/11/2013 19:46

Interesting. When I donated blood for research this year (at CVS appointment), you didn't get a result. Sounds like this is a stage further towards introduction, Crispy.

Hope you reached a decision you're happy with, OP.

grape999 · 28/11/2013 14:07

Thanks for all your comments. I went for a Harmony test earlier this week, so just waiting on results, although the scanner was v positive about measurements. Also found out the sex - a boy - which is exciting after 2 girls.

Best of luck, although I'm sure everything will be fine Smile

CrispyFB · 30/11/2013 22:32

lostlove - It does indeed! There were lots of people who gave blood with their invasive tests but never had a result from it - the blood went straight to research. But this does sound like they're not doing the invasive now and just giving the Harmony result, which is wonderful news. Presumably the invasive will still be available.

grape999 - Congratulations on your boy! I had two girls then a boy, it was a lovely change, although I did miss buying girl clothes as they are so much nicer, heh. I am sure everything will be fine too Smile

grape999 · 06/12/2013 18:45

Got the all clear, or as good as, on Harmony today. Starting to get excited now!
