Abortion... What happens now?

I know there's another thread about this but didn't want to hijack...

I've just found out I'm pregnant (literally about an hour ago) although I've had a sneaky suspicion for a week or so that's just been confirmed. I know 100% that don't want/can't keep the baby so I'm going to have an abortion. I'm 26 and already have 3 children, one with sen and I'm a single parent. I can't believe I was stupid enough to get myself into this mess in the first place...

Anyway, I just wanted to know what happens when you go for you initial appointment and what happens from then on? I'm going to make a doctors appointment tomorrow but I'm a bit nervous.

Also, any ideas on which method they'll use? My periods are irregular and I can't for the life of me remember when my last one was. I had unprotected sex just under 4 weeks ago and it was the first time since before I had my youngest son so I know it can only be from then

Tia

You might want to ask MNHQ to move this to "Antenatal Test/choices" or even "General health" as you are more like to find posters in those places who can help you, rather than here in contraception.

Ok thanks. I just thought family planning was family planning in general, not just contraception. I've asked if they'll move it anyway

Have a look at this NHS page which gives a good overview. It sounds as if you are early enough for a medical termination.

Is your appointment with your GP? If so, they will need to satisfy themselves that you fulfill the criteria for abortion (in terms of the legalities, and there is wide variation in how individual doctors go about this), that you are pg, and your dates, and make a referral for the actual procedure.

Hi auntiestella thanks for replying

I'm going to make an appointment with my GP tomorrow yes. I didn't know there was anyone else I could go to to be honest. The only other person I know of that's been through an abortion is my sister, but I don't want to talk to her about it as I don't want my family to know what's going on Confused

Been to the GP. She's referred me to the hospital, I've got to pick up a letter and appointment tomorrow. Hope they don't make me wait too long Confused

Take care. You will be ok xx

You should get an appointment very soon for a scan, and that may include the start of the termination as well. You can have a medical termination much earlier, though they aren't as easy or as quickly over and done as a surgical termination. I only had to wait 4 or 5 days for a medical termination, though I had to travel a bit to a clinic that had an earlier appointment. Good luck, and feel free to PM me if you want any advice or chat x

The GP has just ring with my initial appointment and scan. 21st November. A week tomorrow. That's not too bad I suppose. I'll be 5 and a half weeks by then. I think ill just look away during the scan because I know if I see it I'll immediately get attached.

They don't show you the scan, it's all done behind you.

BopsX3 · 13/11/2013 12:36

I have to travel a bit to get the hospital I've been referred to aswell. 2 trains and a bus in fact. But it'll be worth it. I know I'm doing the right thing for me and my children. I just couldn't handle another baby at the moment and it would be a lot of strain on us as a family.

Good to know they don't show you the scan. At least thats one less thing for me to worry about

Hi everyone, just wondering, is you GP supposed to keep everything confidential?

It's just that I went to the health visitor today with my youngest son and she knew all about it Hmm she was asking me loads of questions and said the GP had told her what was going on. I really felt like I was put on the spot Confused
