Is there any hope after my 20 week scan

I had my 20 week scan on Friday and my baby was diagnosed with a left Multicystic dyplastic kidney. We went for a second opinion at the fetal medicine centre in Harley st and the condition is worse than first thought as the other kidney is not working properly with a reduced level of amniotic fluid.
I suffered 6 miscarriages before this pregnancy so can't believe this is happening. I know I am clutching at straws but has anyone else had a successful outcome after a diagnosis such as ours?

There is always hope. I copied this thread here from anther site and a number of parents say they had babies with one multicystic kidney and the other one which was oversized too.

This is of course very distressing and worrying but from what I understand, nothing is cut and dried...there are babies born with both kidney's not functioning well and who do recover...have you got another appointment?

Hi Suemays
So sorry to hear your news. We were given the news at our 19 week scan that our baby had bilateral renal agenesis-she had absolutely no functioning kidney tissue so her condition was incompatible with life.

From the research I did at the time if a baby has even a small amount of functioning renal tissue then there IS a chance. I'll be thinking of you and hoping for the best possible outcome for you.

What did they say about prognosis? Not the same situation but my grandad has only ever had one functioning kidney and despite to kidney not always working right he is still here at 82.

Sad What did Prof Nicolaides say?

Thanks for all your replies. I have an appointment with a fetal medicine specialist at my local hospital tomorrow and then going back to the fetal medicine centre on Friday to see what their specialist says. I know that you can function on one kidney if it's normal but in our case it is not normal. I don't want to bring a child into the world where it could face pain or have to spend its life on dialysis but of course if there is a chance that it could lead a normal life then i would grab it with both hands.

I also have a healthy 4 year old so don't want it to affect her life. It would be awful if we were to go ahead and keep on with the pregnancy only for the child to die as a toddler as it would traumatise my 4 year old and the rest of the family.

I will let you all know what the specialists says tomorrow but thanks for your support.

sue I really hope you've had a good appointment. I have my fingers crossed that you may feel better after your appointment. xx

Hope it goes well today. Thinking of you.

The appointment went badly - confirmed that the damage is now in both kidneys with one of the kidneys barely functioning. Amniotic fluid is also low so we were told that the lungs are probably damaged. To make matters worse, we cant get a definite answer from the doctors how bad the damage is or what chances there are of survival. I am paranoid that the baby is in pain and I can't do anything to stop it.
