NT by NHS?

hi
When I had dc1 we had the nt test privately as NHS didn't do it.

I'm now over 40 and a few years later, does NHS do this now? Something I read made me think they did. I'm in Lancaster if that makes any difference.
I'm all woolly about my dates but can't see midwife for almost three weeks.

I had one at Barnsley hospital last year on NHS. I didn't three years previously with previous baby though. Don't know if this was a change in policy, or whether because I was over 40 (just!) second time.

I had one last year on the NHS at Doncaster. I am not 40 sp its probably more what your trust does. It was optional, though I asked for mine.

It varies from area to area. My area (Wandsworth) certainly does do the NT scan and will ask whether you want it or not. But other areas I think do the quad blood test at 16 weeks instead.

You can telephone your local midwives if you want to ask a question, you don't need to wait till your appointment.

Thanks. I think i'll phone the midwife - if i can - not able to book in till the week after next.

I have found a private clinic that will do it locally ( the one I used before is closed) but I am unclear on my dates and worried I'll book an inappropriate date on their onlinebooking system, would be far better to have NHS do it at the normal dating scan and as money is tight also much appreciated.

Lancaster don't do it, but Preston do so you can ask to be scanned there, you have the right to access your treatment wherever you like (its no different to requesting a particular hospital for a hip replacement or whatever, though you MAY need to push a little for this, it's patient choice, you are DEFINATELY allowed, but it doesn't happen often so I don't think the midwives really tell you). I would speak to your midwife and ask them to refer you to Preston for your first scan, though obviously if you do have your dates a bit wrong and are too early you will have to back. Err on the side of caution as too early and you can be scanned again, but too late and you will miss the chance for the test.

TittyBojangles thanks so much that's really helpful to know. I'll try that.

Hi, I think now it has to be offered by the NHS at one of the hospitals in your area. They do the scan and do bloods as well I think. Think is is a standard test though now? (could be wrong!) Grin

EthelredOnAGoodDay · 20/07/2012 20:39

Was introduced in 2011 as a standard screening test I think my leaflet said?

TittyBojangles · 20/07/2012 20:51

Yes it should be offered, but afaik Lancaster don't offer it, yet.
