Just wondering if anyone has been through same/similar??? In feb i had a termination for t21. P again (16 weeks) 12 week scan and bloods gave 1 in 1862 chance of being downs again, just had 16 week scan and amnio and scan showed much 'brighter' bowel. Apparently this is called ecto something or other. Consultant said it could point to early virus in me (i had blood screening at 8 weeks), or it could point to downs/cystic fibrosis, or other chromosomal disorder. They saaid of course there was a chance it is nothing, but i cannot help but think if it was nothing why is it showing up??? The doc has recaculated my chance of having chromosomal prob pregnancy as 1 in 300 based on visuals. I cannot believe this seems to be happening again. Sorry if this doesn't make sense, not feeling very coherent. x

I'm not surprised you're not feeling coherent! Ok - so this is a 'soft' marker isn't it - could be something, could be nothing? What has been suggested as your next step? I assume you'll get the amnio results asap. Have they suggested further scans assuming amnio ok?

hello - next step is results in 8 - 10 working days. Then taking it from there, they have said IF nothing comes up in results, they would scan v frequently, and induce early as the prob with the bowels, or what appears to be prob can cause probs in later stages of pregnancy. They were not to clear on next steps, waiting for results I guess. Worst thing is seeing and feeling it kicking about;(

echogenic bowel, not ecto - clearly wasn't listening

Ok well lets not meet trouble half way then. As I understand it there is a good chance that this means nothing and nobody can tell you why it's there. We tend to view scans as far more definate than they actually are. Like everything there are variations from machine to machine, patient to patient and operator to operator. It must be hard to see baby kicking when you are so scared. However - an active baby is always a positive thing so try and hold on to that. Your 12 week scan and bloods gave you really good odds. I hope you get good news asap.

hey - very similar situation to you - i terminated for T21 and a CH back in March, and pg again (now 26 wks). at 20wk scan they picked up an echogenic lung. we'd avoided all invasive testing as our nuchal odds were 1:1700 - didn't want to take the risk. however further scans and test have identified that our baby has CCAM (a lung malformation) - which IS manageable, although like you may need to deliver early, and baby may need an operation when he is born. alternatively we've been told that it's possible there may be no symptoms at all, and that only a ct scan when he's a few months old might detect the problem
what i'm trying to say (not very well!!) is that these echogenic areas on scans can be something and nothing. the sonographers have to 'report' them as anomolies, but many of the things that are picked up are done so because the equipment is so high tech these days, and many of these would have gone undetected (and be unproblematic)! of course, when you've been through what we've been through anything that's picked up and turn you into a crumbling mess (been there!!!) but i guess on one hand at least they are being very thorough, just doesn't help. there are quite a few threads i've read here on MN about echogenic bowels, where it's turned out to be nothing, and i pray that's what happens with you when you get your results.
please keep us updated as to how you get on. xxxxxxxx
