How early can a scan show a problem? If you've had children already how early can you feel movement?!

Hi - not sure if I can help but bumping for people who may be more knowledgeable.

During my first pg the 12 week scan showed up problems, but I guess it depends what the problem is. Not sure about movement thing as I can't remember, though someone else might know.

Are you worried you have a problem?

I felt movements at about 15 weeks with my 2nd pregnancy.

As for scans picking up problems, it depends what you are thinking of, an ectopic pregnancy can be picked up very early (5 weeks?). Other problems can be found at the 12 week scan as EllieG says.

What are you concerned about?

With my 3rd baby I didn't feel any movement until about 20 weeks

Ok thanks. Guess I'm just a worrier! Just want everything to go ok like any other mum. Hormoans!

Different problems or issues can be picked up at different times. Although my baby's problem was picked up at our 20 week scan it could have been seen from around 15 weeks.

As for movement - it's different for every mum and every baby.

Movement is dependent upon a number of factors like whether you've already had children, your weight, position of placenta etc but largely by 20 weeks you'll start feeling small movements at least. Not every woman will though, some will be later (particular with an anterior placenta) and sometimes you won't recognise the movement as movement iyswim. With subsequent babies of course it can be much earlier.

The scan thing is a difficult one. Because as already said an ectopic would be picked up early, other problems aren't visible until later. But generally each scan not showing any abnormalities should give you a little more reassurance, along with each test you might opt for. It all adds up to a picture of how the baby is developing and the probability of everything progressing normally. There are no guarantees of course but each positive scan is a step towards reassurance.
