My sister had her first scan on weds and they said the nuchal fold test was normal and would she still like the blood test, her results came back today and they said she was high risk for downs syndrome :( they said 1/37.

I have been doing some reading as she is having an amnio on weds and we have a few questions.

Do they scan her aswell? how long do the results take to come back? are they 100%? and also the nuchal fold test that happed at her first scan where on her notes will she find out the measurement? im not with her at the mo but she read them out over the phone and im guessing this is the one we should be looking at? NT manual TA 2.00mm is that good? i have read it should be unde 3mm?

Any info would be appreciated.xx

How old is your sister? As they do the amnio they scan you at the same time so they can see the needle going in. She should ask her midwife to help her find the nuchal result.

AFAIK the amnio results will give a 100% accurate result. Has your sister thought about what she will do if it's bad news?

I'm not sure how long the results take to get back, from lurking here it seems to depend on what hospital you use.

She is 40. I dont think she will cary on if the baby has downs. She keeps saying about what people will think as she has told a few close friends but it's her choice and she has her 12 year old DS to think about. The measurement i posted in my OP i think is the right one and NT means nuchal thickness.

I just dont know what to say to her :(

the nuchal thickness isn't relevant is it? well, i mean it is.. but obv it was normal. and once she has the amnio she will know for certain, so knowing the nuchal thickness from the first scan doesn't help does it?
so don't worry too much about figuring it out

i think if the amnio confirms DS or anything else then she will be offered counselling to help her make her decision

the only thing i would say is that she needs to remember that anything could happen to her child at any time. the baby could NOT have DS, but be born with something else that isn't tested for.
people with Down Syndrome these days can lead pretty much normal lives
