What does the full amnio look for?

As the title says really, I know four syndromes the fast results come back with but what about the full results, is it rare for something to show on these?

Hi kmummy,

I was told by the consultant it is very rare for anything to come back on the full results - I think he said something like in more than 95% of cases if anything is going to show it'll be in the quick results. The letter I had from the hospital to confirm my first results also reiterated that it was very rare for the full karotype to find anything else. I think it's safe to feel somewhat reassured but it was still a big relief when the full all-clear came back for us, although the first results were a huge weight off our shoulders.

We're now waiting for early anomoly and heart scans on Monday and feeling quite anxious about these now.

Good luck

It is rare for something to show on these results but not unheard of - it happened to me. There are 26 chromosomes, many can have an extra one, called trisomies (Down's Edward's and Patau are all trisomies) some can have bits missing, some can have bits transposed. You will feel real and rightful relief if your fast results come back clear, but if they do the full karyotype there is still a possibility that a problem will show, mind you 1:30 isn't so very bad, so they may not do the full karyotype (they don't always)

good luck

Thank you ladies - I was a crying heap waiting for the quads today, I just can't imagine will get the all clear, if we are lucky enough then the fact it's less likely for the full ones to come back with something showing is a slight relief, this past month has been a hell I wouldn't wish on anyone.

Clairezee have you been on DIM on BE? I'm finding it hard to go on there right now :(

Be gentle on yourself Kmummy, it really is the hardest thing and its no wonder you were in tears. Keep thinking that you could be one of the 29, rather than the 1. And get as much distraction as you can. And take comfort where you can

Yes I do go on there but know what you mean - I thought it was you but couldn't remember which names you use!

I haven't really felt able to join in with all the more usual baby stuff on there - it feels like things are on hold for us a bit at the moment. Also, one of the ladies did get bad news and that was hard to read too and felt so sorry for her.

This week is passing quite fast at the moment. I'm going to be too scared to look at the screen on Monday. Even though we've had the chromosome stuff back clear I'm still worried there might be something else. I also went and frightened myself on the internet the other night by searching for other things that can cause high nuchals. Won't do that again - it's such a mixed bag and for every bad story you can find a good one so trying to stay positive.

A lady at work went off on maternity today and I know she's had a totally straightforward pregnancy. I hated feeling it but I found it really hard to be around her.

Yes it's me - could revert back to my old user name once wed told everyone after our 12 wk scan :)

I know, I'm finding it hard to talk 'prams' etc when everything is so on hold for us. The other ladies news was sad I hope her little girl makes it through.

Goodluck for you scan tomorrow - I know what you mean, we have ours on Tuesday, followed by the amnio...it feels like an awful lot to be taken in that day and I'm hoping I hold it together - iv found google can be good and bad, there so many good and bad stories there's no way of knowing how yours will sway, I'm just praying were one of the 29 now, if were the one I'm not sire what I'm going to do :( xxxxx

Thanks and will be thinking of you on Tuesday.

Really hope all is ok for you - we were given odds of 1 in 6 for Downs but still got the all-clear for a chromosomal problem. I've seen stories of people with a 1 in 2 chance where everything turns out ok so really hope you'll be fine too.

I'm glad tomorrow is coming now as I really want to know what's happening but I think I'm going to be too scared to look at the scan to start with. At least a scan is instant though.

Will be thinking of you as you wait next week and here if you need to chat. I found the first two days after having the CVS done ok as I felt relief to have got it out of the way but once we got to the start of the time the results could come back it does drag - we were told anything between 3 and 5 days. Best to just try and keep occupied - saw lots of mindless daytime TV!

Our antenatal test co-ordinators at our hospital were wonderful and very supportive so hopefully you've had the same. We also spoke to a lovely lady at the charity ARC which helped.

Love and best wishes for this week.
