Obsessing over nuchal measurement

nancydrewrocked · 31/08/2010 16:55

Had a CVS today as my DS was stillborn due to downs last year.

Slightly obsessed with the nuchal measurement which today at 11+5 is 3.4 - It's too high isn't it? Dr was very non committal describing it as within normal parameters but equally he kept saying it was largely irrelevant as I have had the CVS done now and that will be definitive.

I know I know I know there is no point panicking whilst I wait for the tests to come in but I just don't think I can cope with this.....

It's on the high side, but I've seen posters with measurements of 5 or 6 point something whose children have been absolutely fine.

I'm surprised they even did the measurement if you were already having the CVS, TBH.

Are you getting the initial "headline" results back quickly?

nancydrewrocked · 31/08/2010 17:26

I pushed to be told the NT - I could see it looked big (IM totally non professional O)and whilst I know second guessing the result is of no help I just needed to know.

Full results are coming back in 4-5 days so maybe Friday but probably Monday....

Its slightly on the high side but not out of the ordinary. DD had a very similar measurement and is a very active and healthy 3 yo. It really really isn't definitive of anything.

Just like professor said in the post above, please don't read too much into this. We had an nt reading of 6.7mm at 13weeks - they told me they were pretty certain my baby would not survive to 16 wks as she also had increased fluid on her heart and stomach. We were asked if we wanted to terminate there and then but went ahead with the cvs. Chromosomes were normal and we just got the all clear today at 20 weeks that everything is fine.

Please don't give up hope x

My measurements were similar from private scan at 11+3, with very high chance of problems, but CVS came in fine, and in fact translucency had shrunk to 1.5 by 12+6 when I had my NHS scan, so...go figure! Just another thing to panic about! Good luck NancyDrew

Thanks everyone.

I'm trying to stay positive but equally I don't want to give myself false hope and I know I am already mentally trying to prepare myself for the worst....

The wait must be sooo hard! Thinking of you and hope you get a result to make you happy!x

Hi nancydrewrocked

If you look on the antenatal results and choices website it says there under nuchal scans 'If the NT measurement is outside the normal range, which is usually 3.5mm and above, you will be told as this can sometimes be an indicator of a problem in the baby?s development.

So according to them your measurement is within the normal range.

I to have been given a high risk 1:5 factor due to the nuchal measuring 4.6 at my 12 week scan I did go for a private combined test and they measured it as 3.2 and gave me a 1:1128 risk.

The nhs don't do the combined test where I live.

Hope your ok am thinking of you and sending postive vibes your way Smile x

Thanks goingmad and janski

Another day down - I so hope the results come in early tomorrow but am prepared for the worst and having to wait the weekend out.

Thanks again Smile

Ok so after the longest 72 hours of my life the results have come back and they are clear.

I cannot believe it and I am obviously absolutely delighted.

Thanks for the hand holding Smile

Fantastic news!!

Just out of interest was your risk combined on nuchal alone or did you have boods as well?

Also did you find out the sex as have read somewhere that a high nuchal can be more common in girls.

So pleased for you x

DuelingFanjo · 03/09/2010 14:35

congratualtions :)

out of interest did you have the blood and the Nuchal scan done togethr and on the same day?

DuelingFanjo · 03/09/2010 14:36

oh - just realised janski has asked the same.

the reason I ask is my SIL was told her Nuchal thickness was 4mm by an untrained NHS scanner (in Wales) at her 12 week scan who didn't do the bloods and was booked in for a CVS. Instead she had a private scan done a couple of days later and then measured the nuchal fold as under 2mm and she has since been given a 1:3000+ result.

nancydrewrocked · 03/09/2010 16:31

Thanks Smile

I didn't have the bloods done at all. When we lost DS2 my consultant had suggested that my risk would go up 4-fold due to my history which at my age (33) put me at pretty much a 1/115 risk anyway so we went straight for the CVS at 11+5.

It was only when they did the CVS that I thought the nuchal fold looked big and insisted they told me the measurement which was 3.4....which is when the panic really set in.

I am hoping to get another scan in the next few weeks (although have been told it is not medically necessary) just to reassure me but to be fair the professor who did the CVS and scan had already said if the sample came back clear with a measurement of less than 4 the pregnancy could be treated as completely routine.

Re sex - I don't know if the report will contain the info. I didn't ask on the phone as I was too busy blubbing after the midwife told me everything was ok!

I think (unusually) that st georges only test for Downs, Edwards and Pateus. So maybe they wont have tested.

Dueling - what a relief for your sil and such a pity she was caused unnecessary stress by someone who didn't know what they were doing.
