Sertraline and pregnant

Hi everyone,

I am currently 5+1 with my second baby but have been on 50mg of sertraline since my DS was 3 months (he's now3).

I am absolutely worried sick about the impact on my baby due to me taking sertraline but I wouldn't be a good mum or partner if I stopped taking it so this isn't an option sadly.

Has anyone got any experience of taking sertraline when pregnant as it would be great to know I'm not alone

It's totally safe - I took 200mg throughout pregnancy without any issues. It's pretty much the safest AD to take in pregnancy and the one that perinatal mental health teams generally give you. Please don't worry about it; all the best for your pregnancy Thanks

I took it all through my first pregnancy on the advice of both doctors and midwives.

Hiya, so glad I've come across this. I found out I was pregnant last week and have also been on 50mg of sertraline since my little one was 3 months. So been on sertraline for about a year now. When I found out I was pregnant I panicked and googled...as you do! Read things like sertraline is linked to autism and heart defects if taken when pregnant so I've come off cold turkey. It's horrible, I'm feeling extremely angry and irritated then the next breath I'm crying at something so silly. Constantly dizzy all day long with these strange head buzzing sensations. I dont know what to do! Havent been doctors yet as couldn't get an appointment. I know these feelings are withdrawal and not pregnancy symptoms. The anger is unreal that I'm feeling like proper rage. I then feel anxious because I worry that the anger and stress will cause a miscarriage:-(
Sorry for long post but just had to get it all of off my chest!!

I’d think very carefully before coming off it. I did when I was pregnant and for some reason couldn’t tolerate it (or any SSRI’s) when I went back on it after giving birth. Obviously this won’t be the case for most people but in hindsight it might have been better for me to remain on it as I’m now not taking anything which is a shame as they really changed my life for the better.

Hi everyone

Thanks so much for your replies, it's honestly nice to know I'm not alone.

@modernfamily77 maybe think about restarting your meds or at least talking to your midwife? A GP suggested I stop cold turkey not so long ago as 50mg is deemed the lowest dose and I was SO ILL! I was a wreck, had pins and needles, palpitations, electric shocks, awful moods etc. It is not nice to go cold turkey and it's absolutely fine to need medication. I told my midwife this and she was really annoyed that I'd been given that advice. I hope you're feeling ok x

My midwife has referred me to the mental health midwife team at my request so hopefully they'll be able to offer some good advice and put my mind at rest.
