Unmarried parents - new baby's surname?

New daughter is here and still choosing her name. We are not married but would all like to have same surname. We are engaged but can't afford a wedding currently.

What's the pros and cons of giving baby her dad's surname? I don't like the idea of it being different to mine really.

Give baby yours and he can change his when you get married.

Double barrel, give her yours or just get married.

My sister, niece (4) and I were flying back from Europe recently. Sis and niece got stuck and questioned quite intensely as they don't have the same surname on their passports, my sister hasn't got around to changing her passport since she married. They were eventually let through, but it was upsetting.

Personally I would hate my child having a different name to me, but that's me.

I don't see the point in double barrelled names personally. And if your child goes on to marry someone with a double barrelled name, what, will the they then have 4 surnames?? It's just silly.

Pick a name and stick with it. Personally I just kept my name and DS has OHs name.

eight it's not silly. It's then up to the person to choose what they do with their name.

We did "pick a name and stick with it". DH and I both double barrelled on marriage so DD has the same. It's really not a massive hassle Hmm

And thrillhouse is right - if you choose single over double barrelled, keep your name, you gave birth to her!

Then if/when you marry your other half can take yours - simple :)

Eh?

My parents married after my birth and I've never been re-registered. My father's details are on my BC.

DS was given dp's name then a few years later I decided to change my name to the same by deed poll.

Before that I was never ask to prove I was his mum apart from bringing his birth cert when we fly which is standard (though totally pointless since I proved DS was mine but they never asked for proof I could take my niece abroad as we shared a name at the time I could have abducted her no bother)

Sorry to hijack but I 'm utterly confused by this thread... I just stumbled across it whilst browsing. My parents were never married and I had my mums surname at birth. Then it was changed to my dads surname by deed poll when I was about 10 or 11.

I'm currently pregnant and we're not married although I'd like to think we will one day. I planned on giving our baby his surname (call me old fashioned and sexist if you will) so where does this leave me and the baby when/if we do get married? And what do people mean about rights if we're only cohabiting not married?
