Would I BU to report this accident to RSPCA or police, or should I just leave it?

My initial instinct was to leave it but speaking to a friend who has dogs she was adamant it should be reported...hence asking for advise.

Neighbours of mine have a dog, they're quite irresponsible dog owners, dog would be left home alone, not walked very often and would often escape from the garden when they were home and run round the street. Whenever the dog escaped, the parents would tell the children - not sure of ages, late primary or early secondary I think - to fetch her in. It's a big crossbreed dog but looks a bit like an XL bully.

We live on a busy road. Sadly, the dog escaped again over the weekend, and while the children were chasing her back it, she was hit by a car and fatally injured. Which is obviously very sad for the poor dog and the driver of the car (who I know by sight as he works for a local business).

I was going to reach out to the driver, as I saw what happened and it definitely wasn't his fault, but should I do anything else in terms of reporting? I don't know what the owners have done, but doubt they will have reported as they didn't even take the dog to the vet 😢

If I were you, I would give my details to the driver as a witness in case his car was damaged and he wants to make a claim against the owners.

I hit and killed a dog once with my car when it ran out of a camp site on a national speed limit road. I reported it to the police because Google said I should. I just filled out a form. Nothing else ever came of it. Don't think there is much point you reporting it, especially as you weren't the driver.

The driver's insurance company will have told him to report it to the police, legally the liability is with the dog owner and the driver is the victim.

You could report it to either. Are there other pets in the home? If yes then report to RSPCA.

I don't know the drivers name but know him by sight as he works locally.

I'd stay out of it tbh. What is there to gain from reporting it? Apart from causing more upset?

Personally, if you're that way inclined, I'd say a short private prayer for the poor dog, hope for swift healing to all the humans involved, and go on your way.

There is no register of dead dogs like there is for humans, you don’t need to report it. And vets cannot bring pets back to life.

If you had concerns about the dog, during its lifetime would have been the time to report anything.

crabcakesalad · 26/04/2022 16:48

Actually no @Aprilx if there are more pets in that home then they may be at risk and it is always worth reporting so the RSPCA have a log of it even if nothing comes of the first reported concern

Legally the driver is meant to report hitting the dog - don’t they class it as being out of control?
