Robbing from Tesco with impunity *edited by MNHQ*

I just got off a bus outside a Tesco that is a short walk from where I work to buy some yogurt and fruit for breakfast. On the bus there were three horrendous guys - loud, under the influence, scruffy, swearing, F-ing and Jeffing across the aisles at each other. They got off at the same stop - well, burst off the bus laughing - and burst into Tesco. I watched them saunter up to the booze aisle laughing as they went, nick a bottle of spirits each and walk out laughing in front of all the staff (floorwalking).

I challenged one of the members of staff (a big guy who could handle himself) as to if he was going to let them get away with it. He says they come in every morning and help themselves and nobody is allowed to touch or challenge them. They've contacted the police who don't want to know.

I told him "Right, see you then, I'm helping myself to these strawberries and this yogurt, have a nice day!" and he said I was OK to do that!!! Of course I told him I was joking and I paid.

How in hell have we got to this state of affairs in this country? Or my town specifically?

@Elieenmorrigan
"In order to stay competitive in the marketplace Tesco's (and other supermarkets) operate on very small profit margins"

Lol. Tesco made £753m profit last year.

Wsmi · 11/08/2023 09:57

Like PP said shop staff should call the police and say that the shoplifter misgendered them. The blue lights would come racing across the town then.

BlowDryRat · 11/08/2023 09:57

It's the same at my local Co-op. They have regulars who brazenly steal their weekly shop. The staff have been instructed not to intervene in any way as it's not worth the risk of being killed or injured. The Tesco next door has security guards with body cams.

WeetabixTowels · 11/08/2023 09:57

He probably couldn’t be arsed with a busybody making his nightmare job even more of a nightmare.

Its Friday - relax!

Yes, because a 100% true story that someone posted on a forum means the whole world is heading towards barbarism.

Do you not watch any news/social media? Videos of thieves stealing stuff and terrorising staff with abandon in the USA whilst security standby are posted almost every day on twitter/tiktok. They don't even hide their faces anymore as they know that nothing will happen to them and they are basically untouchable. It was only a matter of time until it started here. Oxford Street was great in the 90s. I wouldn't bother going there these days.

Yes that’s a small margin. Do you know what margin is? Look it up.

When I was a student I worked in a Spar in a REALLY rough area of town. I never challenged shoplifters. I earned £3.50 per hour, why would I risk a punch in the face so someone didn’t nick a packet of crisps?!

Advicerequest · 11/08/2023 09:58

I was so outraged two years ago in a New York chemist to see that whole sections of higher priced and most wanted on the theft list items (shampoos, face creams, nothing crazy expensive) padlocked plastic protector on the shelves. Couldn't believe that shop lifting was so rife in the city. Depressing that we have reached that state.

MrsMarzetti · 11/08/2023 09:59

I don't know why anyone is surprised after all for the last 25 years instead of raising children to do as they are told we have raised entitled children who are the centre of the universe, they have been indulged and very rarely disciplined. The system has bent over backwards to be so inclusive it is ridiculous. Grown adults now act like children ( stupid little dances on thicktox) and expect everyone to run after them because they have anxiety, a poorly finger, issues with conforming to social norms. Too many feel so bloody entitled. We made the society we have and it will only get worse.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 11/08/2023 09:59

they don't get paid enough to be challenging people like this if i worked there i wouldn't care either tbh

Flatulence · 11/08/2023 10:00

Crime is legal now, thanks to thirteen years of Tory rule axing police funding.
My local force don't even bother to investigate most domestic burglaries; they'll give even less of a shit about shop lifting.
And even if someone did get nicked, the courts have been so massively underfunded, the perpetrators would likely be waiting about 2 years for a magistrates' court appearance.

Octosaurus · 11/08/2023 10:00

Good for them. We're the idiots paying for stuff at Tesco when they are robbing us blind for profit while claiming they have to raise prices because of inflation.

So basically looting then.

This is standard practice in San Francisco now. While those running California are spending time making a case for reparations for descendants of slavery. That’s right. Who cares the lawlessness that citizens face today, including those descendents of slaves paying for the shoplifters to take freebies. But virtues must be signalled.

This country has signed up to the same batshittery. Welcome to la la land.

Yeah but they’ll be sure to arrest you if you say men can’t be women so they aren’t THAT underfunded

CHIRIBAYA · 11/08/2023 10:00

It's not your town specifically. This was on the news a few weeks ago; the Co-op stating that it might be necessary to close down shops in certain areas due to the scale of the problem. In my local Aldi, I was chatting to a young man on the till who was worn down with the number of shoplifters they are having to deal with; literally dozens every day. Some of this will of course be down to the cost of living, but for many it is nothing more than entitlement and criminal behaviour going unchecked. Whether Tesco can take the hit is neither here nor there, it is ALL the paying customers who are funding this lifestyle. When you stop and think about the kelptocrats we have running this country it is hardly surprising that crime is just becoming normalised.

Elis44 · 11/08/2023 10:01

The clips on the news were really scary. Large groups of people dragging open the shop door to get in.

I wouldn't be challenging them either.

Trained officers should be otherwise a free for all. ☹️

LouHey · 11/08/2023 10:01

It's probably company policy. When I worked in retail as a teen in the 90s, we were not to confront shop lifters or try to stop them. Security guards are not supposed to tackle a group of shop lifters. It's just stuff, they don't want staff injured or killed. It's frustrating the police won't help though :(

TheHappyCarrot · 11/08/2023 10:01

Pinkitydrinkity · 11/08/2023 09:19

3 bottles of spirits would be like £50? Peanuts to Tesco’s. I wouldn’t be challenging them either from how you have described them!

You do realise that we all pay for that in higher prices to cover losses. You actually think Tesco swallow that amount from their profits.

bestbefore · 11/08/2023 10:02

All spirits in our tesco are now in these metal nets with tags on. I'm not sure the net can be opened so nicking it is pointless I think?

PriamFarrl · 11/08/2023 10:03

It was on the news the other day that some Co-Op stores can’t even get the police to come out.
Back when I worked in retail in the 90s we were told never to confront shoplifters, but people were never so blatant.

Wsmi · 11/08/2023 10:03

By the way, if anyone is unlucky enough to need the police, just find wherever your local pride event is happening this weekend. Go down there. You will find your town’s law enforcement force having a jolly old time.

Theunamedcat · 11/08/2023 09:15

That's not normal

It's becoming the norm. Lots of shops near my area, even the ones in the leafy suburbs, have thieves doing this regularly. They walk in, take what they want, and what they can sell, and leave. No one does a thing. It makes me very angry.

Ditto here. The only reason to contact the police is to get a crime report for insurance.

This is normal now. That how far this country has sunk. Basically, the police are more concerned about attending the local pride event than dealing with crime. Or policing people’s social media for non crime hate speech. And you are not allowed to use the word criminal to describe a criminal. They must be underprivileged victim of some sort:

i saw a news piece yesterday where one of the state Mayors in America was correcting the language of a reporter who described a group of disaffected youth committing crime as a ‘mob’. Apparently that term is problematic. The large gathering of criminal young people was fine. But calling them a ‘mob’ was the thing to crack down on. It’s fascinating.
