How long would you hope it would take RAC to get to you?

Freezing cold, can't get my car to turn on, 4yo in the car, seems my car has just died out of the blue, told it'll be 5 hours possibly more as they're very busy. Trying to find a pub I can get to somehow but taxi likely to be extortionate due to rural location (no, I'm not asking for money, I'm just really fecked off) I could cry 😭😭😭

I waited over 3 hours on the edge of the motorway (no hard shoulder) on my own with two primary aged children late one December evening. Thankfully civilians stopped and offered help.

They did however come in 15 minutes when I couldn't get my car to start when safely parked outside a friend's house. Sods law.

I was told 5+ hours by the RAC in November . No kids but alone in a station carpark. I kept getting a text every 30 minutes say it was ‘exceptional demand’ or some such rubbish (7pm on a Thursday evening no bad weather apart from it being cold) . Luckily in the end my husband came out to meet me and the security guard called his mate who was a mechanic.

paintitallover · 23/01/2023 22:54

My dd was told 5 hours recently. Must be their new standard. They seem to say it to everyone. Buyer beware, from now on.

Poor you, though.

I've just had this shit show from rac last week. My car completely died no engine, no dash, no heating and couldn't even lock the car. Lone female in -4 weather.

Was told upto 4 hours, after 3 hours they passed me in to one of their "trusted " partners who rang me and said it will be another 2 hours before they got to me.

Turned up after I'd been waiting 4.45 hours nearly in hypothermia with a jump pack and a tiny pick up to be told we can't fit your car in here and you need a tow.

How lkng do you think that will be I said to them. Response was waiting 30-45 minutes and ring our office, which I did to be told rac hadn't got back to them to authorise another call out. Rang rac who told me it could be upto another 4 hours. At which point I lost it completely. Luckily there was a patrol 30 minutes away and it was deverted to me but my god it was bloosly ridiculous.

Neededanewuserhandle · 23/01/2023 22:58

I cancelled my RAC membership due to poor response times and soaring costs - they are owned by a foreign private company now and it looks as if they just trying to maximise profits by not having enough staff to deal with actual breakdowns.

Guessitswednesday · 23/01/2023 23:02

I was left on the side of the motorway alone for 4hrs once. I was thirsty, i needed a wee and i got home feeling absolutely awful. I had to sit in my car in the end, i was freezing cold and i couldn't stand up any longer behind the barriers. I felt so unsafe and exposed.

iwishiwereafirefly · 23/01/2023 23:07

OP...did they text you a tracking link? I had a flat battery a while back and they initially told me 3-4 hour wait but the tracking link showed the driver was much closer. He pulled up behind my car 40 minutes later. I hope you get sorted soon!

Lochroy · 23/01/2023 23:17

How are you now OP?

Please tweet the arse out of this when it's resolved. Anyone who pays for RAC membership would NOT expect to be left alone with a child in the dark for so long.

Ljc1985 · 24/01/2023 06:42

Genuinely I hate it when the daily fail uses mumsnet posts but I would really like them to use this one.

I hope your hope and warm OP

Whowhatwherewhenwhy1 · 23/01/2023 19:44

I thought small children and women alone in the dark were given priority? I would ring back!

They aren't.

I was left on a closed down petrol forecourt for 5 hours by them with 2 disabled kids in the car.

NorthernLights5 · 24/01/2023 06:57

They told me 5hrs, middle of the night, lone female. Didn't come, I wasn't too far from home so they paid for a taxi and said they'd call when they were 30mins away. Over 24hrs later and me phoning back several times they still didn't come so DPs friend towed it toa garage for me.

Oblomov22 · 24/01/2023 07:00

This is all so poor isn't it? Disgusting service.

Gingerninja4 · 24/01/2023 07:01

They are rubbish I find ,I did 5 hours at side of motorway afyer a tyre blpw out hey informed highway police they told me as unable.to exit the vehicle to safe place as in wheelchair

After 4 hours and a near miss I called highways myself who said not been told and they dispatched officer to sit behind me and then ripped into RAC as the time should been there us 60 mins for mobility vehicle and vulnerable driver ( im the driver and the wheelchair user )and travelling alone

Next time I will call highways myself

TheNinny · 24/01/2023 07:03

I knew people who a few weeks ago were told someone was coming shortly/asap. 6 hours later and multiple phone calls no one had turned up. They were in a ritual areas but still. They eventually paid a local tow person £200 to get car and drive them the rest of their 2 h journey home. I would definitely not wait if have another option. And cancel your membership (but for reimbursement first)
