Hospital mistakes, but no harm done. Title edited by MNHQ at request of OP.

It was a different dose to normal, and I did query it at the time. I was given my next appointment, which was wrong, and I said it was wrong, but I was told that it must have been changed, and I would be informed. Well, I wasn't informed so I rang the hospital, and I have been given the wrong appointments. I was given my medication to take home, but one of it I have never seen before, and that was wrong too, so now I am seriously thinking I have been muddled up with some one else, and I might have got the wrong dose of chemotherapy too.

I rang the hospital to ask if I should be taking this new medicine, and was told no, it hadn't been prescribed for me, bring it back.

What shall I do about thinking the chemotherapy dose might have been wrong too? I don't have any proof, I just know how much I was given, and it was not my normal amount.

WWYD?

I have no idea, but I'm sorry you're having to go through deal with this. I hope you get some answers soon

Rollingaroundinmud · 29/03/2023 02:02

I hope you get answers soon don't let them get away with it. Any pain you feel or sickness bugs you get make sure you get it sorted and don't let the doctors shoo you away. They like to say don't worry and then something happens. Take care of yourself.

I would ring the unit and ask to speak to the nurse in charge and explain your concerns.

Or the manager.

GoodChat · 29/03/2023 07:15

@dontcallitsavvyb and she'd already had a call back from a doctor at that point, so your comment was unhelpful.

LIZS · 29/03/2023 08:06

If it is wrong the hospital needs to report the errors and investigate. PALS can help you ensure this happens and you are informed of any outcome. .

CallintheClowners · 29/03/2023 11:42

He said my recollection of my dose does not tally with my notes, and this is all very worrying, but not dangerous. He said as long as it was my normal E and C, I am sure it was, as it was the normal colours.

This is not reassuring @ghi

Have you made any progress today?

He's saying your recollection of what you had (yesterday?) does not tally with your notes.

If you were given too much of one drug andnot enough of the other, is that an issue?

I can see he was trying to reassure you, but at the same time, was he covering up for a mistake and playing it down?

@GoodChat Doesn’t sound completely resolved and OP can contact her CNS, about this or any other issue.

Really living up to that username

GoodChat · 29/03/2023 12:09

@dontcallitsavvyb she's going to the hospital today to get it resolved.

FlamingoQueen · 29/03/2023 12:09

I hope you’re ok Flowers

hello, just got in. No answers yet, but I have had a full battery of blood tests, and I will know what they show tomorrow. They are checking blood count and some markers in the liver, @Wildro or @toomuchfaster may know what that is about, more than I do.

Well, I was interviewed with tea and biscuits, and it was confirmed again that the medication I was given to go home with is wrong, and the appointments I was given were wrong, and my memory of what chemo I was given does not tally with my notes.

I was asked how confident I was about continuing my treatment at this hospital, and I said I don't want to change hospitals, but I do what to know what happened.

I think it will take some time. I will update when my blood test results are back, and if they shed any light on anything.

Wow, well done ghi for noticing there was something wrong and speaking up about it.

surrenderdorothy · 29/03/2023 14:09

This is so unnerving. I guess they'll check your liver function to be on the safe side. I hope they sort out their procedures. It shouldn't have taken you noticing, and informing them, over and over, and still not being believed. So glad you got tea and biscuits and proper consideration at last.

WimbyAce · 29/03/2023 14:48

Wow this is dreadful. Be interested to hear the outcome on this.

well, I don't necessarily think there is going to be a clear outcome - there is no proof either way about what dose I got. My notes say one thing ,and my memory says a different thing. Blood tests wont prove anything, they will just say if I have responded in a way consistent with previous doses or not. And I think it will all take weeks to look into, as well. I will update, because I know what it is like when you want to know what happens in the end, on a thread you have read. But I am not frightened any more, and I know it might take a long time, and there might not be a clear answer in the end anyway.

Thank you everybody for your support when I was quite frightened last night.

They should be able to work it out. Using your recollection they should be able to know if someone else was having that number of syringes at around the same time.

Hopefully they’re reviewing everyone who was around at similar times to you, and whose meds were dispensed at similar times, and all the pieces put together will form the full puzzle.

IthappenedtoDH · 29/03/2023 15:04

Well done for persisting, OP. This is so stressful. I am very glad you are finally being taken seriously. Please keep us updated.

CastlesinSpain · 29/03/2023 15:20

I was frightened for you and it's certainly made me nervous. I've just had my first round of chemo - next starts in about 10 days - and I'm going to be a lot more vigilant about what drugs I am given next time.

adriftabroad · 29/03/2023 15:25

Shocking. Well done OP.

GoodChat · 29/03/2023 15:36

You've handled this incredibly @ghi

Fluffodils · 29/03/2023 15:41

Nicely handled OP

When I had chemo I was told exactly what drugs I would be given. At the clinic two nurses asked me my name and NHS number every time, read out the name of the drug and dose to each other and checked it. I would have known straight away if it wasn't what I expected.
In the OPs case she didn't know the name only the colour.

Well done @ghi and I wish you all the best for your recovery. I bet you get VIP treatment from now on!

themonkeysnuts · 29/03/2023 17:46

Well done to you for the way you have handled it.
Its worrying that they can make a mess with such important drugs
All the best for your recovery

Shz · 29/03/2023 18:07

Wishing you well with rest of your treatment

I hope the medical team treating appreciate how reasonable and understanding you have been about the mistake made.
