for wanting DH to do an OU course?

He is out of work, has been for a while. He is on incapacity.

I understand he cannot go to work but I feel this is an oppotunity for him to study and do something with meaning.

He has had shop jobs all his life and this work just adds to his depression, if he had a job he enjoyed then maybe he could feel much more confident and happier in himself.

I just know he is going to have to go back to work at some point, and i think it would benefit him so much!

How can I convince him?

YANBU for wanting him to do it

YABU for trying to force it upon him. It's a lot of work and you've got to be in the right frame of mind to do it.

I'm a tutor disenchanted and I would say that it does change how people think about themselves. If he needs a confidence boost it is a great idea, but a lot of work & he would need to be motivated.

An OU course might be a bit daunting to start with if he is not that way inclined, could you/he find a nearby collage course maybe just a term or a yr that he could do instead to start with?

He could start with an Openings course. I've just finished one (Understanding Children) and started another (Psychology), and am loving it. Especially because they are not too much of a commitment, financially, or time wise. If he enjoys it, he could always go on to a "proper" one. The tutor support can be smashing too.

BTW YANBU, I did one recently, a short course & it gave me such a boost when I passed !

I did three years before DD got sick. I loved it. I left school at 15 and had no confidence in my abilities at all.

I did an openings course which helped me learn how to study and write an essay.

I did really well and it was wonderful getting high marks for my TMAs. Everytime I got the envelope back I was convinced it would be a rubbish mark!

I am making moves to go back. They have been absolutly lovely and very sensitive re why I left and what I can take on sensibly.

I was doing a Childhood and youth studies degree but I am thinking of changing to an open degree as I feel it would put me under a bit less pressure.

He HAS to be ready to do it though. Its a lot of work and if he is depressed it could make it worse. I know I will have to be careful and very organised. If I get behind and under stress it wont do me any good.

But I would recommend it when he feels he can manage it. He could do a 10 point course to start and see how he copes.
