our neighbours are having some building work done and it has been going on now for 2 weeks and is making quite a lot of noise and mess. we have a sloping glass roof on one side of our kitchen and it is now literally coated in a thick coating of grey dust and grime created by their building work. AIBU to ask them to ensure that the roof gets cleaned when the work is finished? it is really expensive to get it cleaned the window cleaner charges us £40 to do it.

I would definitely mention it yes... their builders should clean it.

cyb · 09/07/2010 14:18

yes they should organise cleaning of it.

mamsnet · 09/07/2010 14:18

Not unreasonable at all.. this type of inconvenience should be factored into their costs.

SloanyPony · 09/07/2010 18:11

Yes I suppose so depending on how often you get it cleaned anyway. If it was sort of due a clean soon anyway, I'd leave it on the basis that I would have been doing it sometime soon anyway. However, if you'd just had it done and its only something that needs doing every 3 months or so, then they should really.

YANBU......they should arrange to have it cleaned or at least give you the cash to get it sone yourself.

YANBU - you are also within your rights to ask for a party wall agreement if you are in a terrace and they are using a shared wall - sounds like it is a side return being done?. They have to pay for a party wall survey to be done (about £1k). As part of this it can be agreed that they need to clean away any debris weekly (this would be normal). You can also agree when they can do the work - within reason.
