to think that children are over entertained these days (and I include my PFB in this!)

Went to Legoland today with DS (4)..he moaned the whole time and there were a number of other kids moaning as well..

Ok, it was humid, maybe he was tired or he's coming down with something...

But I couldn't help thinking 'in my day' if I was taken to an amusement park, I would have been far too excited to moan and whinge..

Which led me to think that maybe kids are becoming blase about entertainment due to pressure on parents to entertain them all the time and thus they are used to it?

I include myself in this by the way...much parental angst suffered when I think he's bored, despite my mum and Great Granny nodding sagely and informing 'its good for kids be bored now and then...

Hm...

YANBU. Benign neglect is the way forward. Well, it is in this house.

I just love all the random stories and drawings my 4 year old does on the one day a week we spend all day boringly doing nothing (actually my cleaning the house day). Sometimes she gets into this big box and stays there for hours talking to herself. In a creative lovely way, not a mad way

I had ds1 (4 and a bit) to myself for once on Weds am (dd2 was in nursery and my work days switched around). We had a great time. The highlights were: 2 bus rides, lunch in a cafe and a walk by the river. A red letter day for him and I loved it too.
He spends hours playing with his trains/ duplo/ soft toys/ climbing frame/ crayons requiring no input from me (except sometimes to admire the lovely vehicles he draws), so I really enjoy playtime with him. I have never heard him say "I'm bored"; he goes and finds a book, or something.

The best thing that you can do for your DC is let them be bored. They have to be inventive rather then expect others to entertain.

I remember taking our boys to Eurodisney years ago when they were little - getting them up really early for a magical mystery tour etc... anyway they were both miserable buggers all day and I heard myself say "You WILL enjoy yourself"
We still laugh about it 13 years later!!
Give them a huge cardboard box instead - much less painful...and the imagination goes wild.
