to think that Mom is an Americanism too far

I must be an old fart. I keep reading threads where people refer to their mother as 'mom' and it sets my teeth on edge. Has there been some new shift in British pronunciation that I'm unaware of? Should the site be called Momsnet? Seriously, could someone can reply and tell me their reasoning for spelling mum like mom, and put a miserable old bag out of her misery

Oi I am from Birmingham and we all say Mom here. (Well at least me and my family do).

SrStanislaus · 08/07/2010 18:40

YABVU

AFAIK there are several overseas Mumsnetters who will use MOM as naturally as we use Mum. Plus I know that around west midlands area Mom is very common pronunciation of Mum .

They are all entitled to write that or any word exactly as they please.

Friend of ours is originally from Stoke and he calls his mother "Mom".

spanxaremyonlyfriend · 08/07/2010 18:41

YABVU Mum is a regional variation that just happens to be more common than mom and mam. It doesn't make it right just because its bigger.

fifitot · 08/07/2010 18:42

Mom is what they say in the Midlands. Not an Americanism.

Like in the North lots of people say Mam.

leggymambo · 08/07/2010 18:42

YABU, I am from Wolverhampton and have always used Mom as did everyone in the area

valiumSingleton · 08/07/2010 18:43

I've heard it in my area too. I think some people don't want to say Mam or Mum and to avoid nailing their colours to the mast they say Mom! That's my theory.

Face it, we will all be saying elevator and sneakers in ten years. Just roll with it. [cookie and some soda?]

I did a thread on this ages ago and was badly flamed!
Good luck to you

WarrenPeace · 08/07/2010 18:44

This is done so often!

Im a black country girl, we say, write, and think MOM, Mum is weird

Its not a new thing, it has ALWAYS been MOM in the Midlands

HoopyFroodDude · 08/07/2010 18:47

I don't mind it. I do think that twilightmom is a bit odd though. I was a woman in a t- shirt with that on it the other day.

Riven - my dad writes it's "mam"

spanxaremyonlyfriend · 08/07/2010 18:49

I don't know anyone who says mam but writes mum. People adapt cards to say mam instead of mum. I am perfectly capable of pronouncing mum inspite of my accent. I can say bum, gun, gum perfectly well but for me my mam is my mam, not my mum.

5DollarShake · 08/07/2010 18:52

The Op is just asking...!

If you don't know, and don't ask, you don't find out!

I used to think it was slightly odd too, but learnt some time ago that Midlands folk say Mom, not to mention people from other countries...

I call my mum Mom quite a bit and am a midlands lass, definitely not a Telly thing either as we didn't have one until I was 22.

OP might 'just be asking' as long as it doesn't turn into an anti americanism thread. We have some American friends on here and it would be offensive to be rude about them wouldn't it? It has been know to happen.

aimee0211 · 08/07/2010 18:56

I say Mam but write Mum if I'm talking to people I don't know/ not from up north. My friend from Nottingham says Mom and it shocked me at first as I thought it was only American's that said it, but she said loads of people do, (although I secretly still find it strange to hear, each to their own )

bleedingheart · 08/07/2010 18:56

West Midlands card shops are full of mom cards. More 'mam'/'mum' than 'mom' in the East Midlands I think.

Tinasan · 08/07/2010 18:59

StewieGriffinsMom - fgs, I am perfectly aware that some Americans use the site. I didn't say the term mom was wrong, just very odd that British people would choose to write it when everyone I've ever met uses mum/mam/mummy/mammy/mother....guess it's obvious I've not visited the Midlands much I didn't know that Midlands folk say mom though so I guess that accounts for some of the momming! [accepts cookie and soda gratefully]
