I know there have been loads of early morning waking threads at the mo - but just needed to vent! 4.30am - 5am every day for the last week and a bit. Arghhhh. Okay feel a bit better now. Please tell me this is just a phase and I wont have to wait until he is a teenager for a decent nights sleep!

You have a toddler, I'm guessing?

It's a phase! It's a horrible, cruel, malicious phase. That they grow out of. Promise.

When he's a teenager, you can wake him up at 5am with an air horn. Or better yet, pay someone else to do it, and stay in bed yourself.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/07/2010 05:57

they do grow out of it, plus they can entertain themselves safely. if dd wakes early she just grabs a book.

izzybiz · 07/07/2010 06:07

Oh I know how you feel!

Ds 21 months had been going through a fantastic phase of sleeping through every night till 7ish every morning.

I had gotten used to it....

Now he is in a phase of climbing out of the cot twenty times a night, shouting at the top of his lungs if he wakes in the night and now waking at 5ish every morning

It will pass, it will pass....

lucky1979 · 07/07/2010 06:29

I feel your pain! Been up with DD since 5:30 for the last two weeks

It's just a phase....

SarfEasticated · 07/07/2010 06:36

How long a phase are we talking?

barbie1 · 07/07/2010 06:41

I would love dd to sleep for more than 2 hours so in my case yes you are being unreasonable 6 hours of sleep would be fantastic!

Aeschylus · 07/07/2010 07:07

4.45 here been going on for a month now so tired. and why do they wake up so happy

compo · 07/07/2010 07:17

I'm wondering about buying a vuvuzela for when they're teenagers

artifarti · 07/07/2010 07:25

It's just a phase! My DS did this from 7mo (April) until 12 mo (August) last year. 5.30 or earlier without fail. It nearly killed me! It stopped when the mornings got darker and throughout winter he was was mostly okay (well, past 6am anyway). I take it you have tried black out blinds and all that? (Didn't make a difference for us last year but this year has been okay apart from when we go and stay somewhere else - I've just had a week of 5am after going to Granny's but later bedtime and complete blackout have got us back on track now.) Hang on in there - we are past mid-summer now and heading towards winter darkness!

notremotelyintofootie · 07/07/2010 08:20

its not just the early rising is it, dd (7 months) decided to wake every hour or so again last night! Cuddling didnt work, nor did bf until shes so tired....

On a plus note, ds started sleeping to about seven/half past a year ago, mind you he is almost eleven! So... I have about ten more years of early rising!

porcamiseria · 07/07/2010 08:56

this weather is weird, mine is refusing to go to bed, REFUSING, screams etc. last night he went down at 10pm

Lets hope its a phase eh!

homebirthmummy4 · 07/07/2010 10:35

breast fed (sorry, comfort suck) 4 week old throughout the night last night. no sleep whatever, 6 hours sounds great but hope im not saying that in a years time. hope you manage a nap today.

porcamiseria · 07/07/2010 10:51

I am really looking forward to having a newborn and a toddler, andall their sleep issues to contend with

CANT WAIT!!!!

melikalikimaka · 07/07/2010 10:55

I think everyone is having trouble sleeping, it doesn't help when the birds are so noisy, one was tapping the guttering by my bed the other morning which woke me with a start. The light mornings, birds singing and the heat. It won't last long and then it will be WINTER!

Cadders1 · 08/07/2010 07:03

It is a bit depressing when we are hoping for Winter! 4.30 on the dot this mmoring - well he is off back to bed soon - think I will do the same!

Well, my dc's sleep like logs (15 and 11), it's just me who wakes up at 4.30, (and 1.30, and 6am) every blooming day, and I'm knackered.

When my dt's were small, I used to end up sleeping on the floor in their bedroom as I was too tired to go back to bed in the room next door. Breastfeeding every 3 hours, on the dot for 6 months nearly did for me, and I did begin to question my sanity!

Try not to think about it too much, and yes, catch up when you can!

AmazingBouncingFerret · 08/07/2010 10:18

Im so looking forward to my DD being a teenager and being able to wake her up every hour or so by shaking her and anxiously shouting "wake up wake up" and when she does.. I'll say "nothing go back to sleep"

Floopy21 · 08/07/2010 12:49

6 hours is quite a lot. Enjoy!

SarfEasticated · 09/07/2010 07:21

The slightly galling thing as far as I'm concerned, is that it's been 3 years since I had a good night sleep. No-one told me that children didn't sleep for so long - I was expecting it for a few months but this is ridiculous!

fairybubbles · 09/07/2010 08:23

Just take it easy and sleep whenever you can.... you DC will grow out of it.

Have you considered if there are any other fators affecting his/her sleep?
I mean things like the temperature of the room, the foods eaten, activity levels of your child etc.

Sorry, maybe not much help but i know our DS wakes if he is too cold. He is 3 yrs old and will come through and wake us (often when he goes to bed the room is really warm but the temp drops a fair bit during the night).

Does you child eat well at the evening meal, if not there is a possibility he is waking due to hunger... perhaps offer a light supper later in the evenings.
4.30am is v early, especially if this goes on for a period of time. HTH x

bumpsnowjustplump · 09/07/2010 08:32

I managed to sleep until 6.00 this morning before they woke up..... Just a shame the little one was up crying until 2 this morning and I ended up sleeping on his floor with my hand in his cot stroking him bum......

So I really do feel your pain... but six hours sounds like forever to me
