to think that a GPs surgery might show a little bit of support to a breastfeeding support group?

Was at my surgery today for an appointment with DS, and whilst I was there I asked the receptionist if it would be possible to put a poster on their noticeboard to promote the BF support group that I am a peer supporter at. (Group is certainly within catchment area for the surgery).

Receptionist said "No dear, we don't put advertisements up on our boards"

Me: "But it's a breastfeeding support group?"

Her: "No"

Me "You can't promote BF support? In a GP surgery?"

Her: "It's against our policy to advertise anything"

Me: "But it's health promotion - the HVs attend alternate weeks too?"

Her: "Sorry, No"

FFS!

Then got snooty when I asked how much longer the doctor would be, given he was 15 mins late already, and I'd been sitting there for 25 mins with a toddler & baby. That's a different story though...

My surgery is full of adverts for various groups. How weird.

Seems daft! Is the HV attached to your GP surgery? Maybe she could place the poster for you - though she may have as much luck with the receptionist!

ReasonableDoubt · 06/07/2010 20:49

How odd. Our GP surgery hosts a breastfeeding support group, a general postnatal group and a teenage parents group. If I were you I'd ask to speak to the practice manager and complain!

i would write to the practice manager and ask her if you could put one up

Mingg · 06/07/2010 20:50

Do they have other ads there? If no ads is their policy then why should they make an exception for you? Surely you can ask the HVs to let others know?

MrsKitty · 06/07/2010 20:51

HV was given posters months ago, and others at the group were under the impression they were up, however I'm the only one that actually attends this particular surgery and have never seen any. Made a point of looking today too.

The stupid thing is they've got posters up for Childline, Consumer advice line (or something ) as well as a poster for a breast cancer support group, so why they couldn't put ours up is truly beyond me...

But Mingg - it's not as if it's just a Mother & Toddler group, or a playgroup/nursery, whatever... It's surely a health promotion group, therefore why the hell shouldn't it be up in a GPs surgery?

Writing to practice manager is a good idea - thanks Yesterday & Reasonabledoubt. Will do that this week.

If they have other ads then yours should go up too. Like suggested above complain to the practice manager.
