to worry abt dd ears at an airshow?

DH wants to treat his parents and himself to the air show. I'm neutral, but he kind wants us to all go as a family.
My one concern is dd (15m) ears...will it be too loud at an air show for her?

(oh and is it likely that the chicken pox we've just started today will be ok by the 25th?)

Get her some ear defenders - if you google you can find ones for babies. I would not take her without them - not only might it damage her ears but she will probably cry at the noise. Actually I'm not sure it's a very good place to take a baby

PortiaNovmerriment · 06/07/2010 15:07

I thought this was going to be a thread about Dumbo...

bebemoohatessnot · 06/07/2010 15:15

LadyBiscuit- I've not been to one myself so I'm not sure what to expect really, though back home they have one, but the grounds are much bigger than the one we might possibly be going to...

Portia- would I be a dumbo for taking her

My dad is taking my 10 nephew to Farnborough and my DS is also invited but I know he'd hate the loud noise (even though he loves planes) - he's 3. Mind you he cries at handdriers so he's not the bravest of souls when it comes to loud noises

Druzhok · 06/07/2010 15:18

Oh yes, get something.

We took DD and she really enjoyed everything that was going on, but it is far too noisy for a baby!

bebemoohatessnot · 06/07/2010 15:22

that's the one..in Farnborough...

She's not too bad with noises...is it really loud at these things? Or is it mostly walking around looking at planes?
Maybe I should take her shopping in Reading instead?

The planes are flying mainly. And they are military jets etc. It's very loud

bebemoohatessnot · 06/07/2010 15:33

Right. Hmmmm.
Thinking it's not the best idea then...

You can buy ear defenders at all the airshows.

bebemoohatessnot · 06/07/2010 15:42

I did find some defenders for £14 which seems a good price...I wonder if dd will want to wear them however even if I do get her the lovely blue ones to go with her blue butterfly dress...

The RNID provide good ear defenders but your DD has to be of a certain age to use them.

Google them, Im sure they have loads of suppliers who are health checked.

Lionstar · 06/07/2010 16:16

Spare a thought for my poor DD who goes to a nursery right at the bottom of the Farnborough runway. It is LOUD, especially the jets that fly straight up vertically - the sound fires straight down on the nursery . However the kids do cope with it. They are kept in when it is very loud with some music on. Other times they get to see some amazing displays.

I do have ear defenders for her (DP is a musician) but she doesn't like to wear them any more.

She might not be bothered FioFio, but hearing damage is probably the main concern.

Anything above 80 decibals (someone shouting) can even cause problems.

I took my DD (14 weeks) to the air show at RAF Waddington this past weekend. I ordered some ear defenders from Peltor Kids (suitable from birth to age 7) and she was fine.

Lonicera · 07/07/2010 17:33

the harrier is VERRRRRRRRRRRRRY loud especiallly if it does a close up and bows to the crowd

(Duxford veteran )

notalone · 07/07/2010 17:34

I have some horrible memories of going to Farnborough airshow as a child. I remember crying and crying at how loud it was and my parents refused to leave because they had paid. This happenned at least twice

I would definitely invest in some ear defenders or she will end up terrified and you won't have a good time either

Lonicera · 07/07/2010 17:36

We took DD1 to Waddington airshow when she was about six months old and just put normal sized defenders on her when the biggies were doing a fly over, she wasn't bothered about having them on at all.

She looked right funny though

pagwatch · 07/07/2010 17:39

WE have been to Farnborough several times and it is really nosiy. It isn't just loud - it is the kind of noise that you can actually feel.

But they sell ear defenders and once something loud has flown over once most children will put them on and won't give a stuff what colour they are.

Lonicera · 07/07/2010 17:39

poor you herbie

I used to live in Concords flightpath- you couldn't hear yourself speak when it went over

fruitshootsandheaves · 07/07/2010 17:43

We have been to lots of airshows as Dh is a real bore enthusiast when it comes to planes.
We always take ear defenders. It is very noisy. We used to use ear defenders for firework night too!
