if he attends a nursery one day a week where there have been cases of measles and mumps where parents haven't given their children the MMR Vaccine. He will be just over 6 months.

I have worked in a nursery for 6 years i have not seen one case of measle or mumps, in that entire time, and yes we do have children that have not been vaccinated as well.

Your child may be just as likely to catch these things at the supermarket, out shopping, a trip to the park!

Does the nursery your child attend to have cases of mumps and measles already?

snickersnack · 04/07/2010 18:28

Well, not much you can do really. ds caught measles at 8 months, no idea where or who from. And because it wasn't diagnosed when the rash first appeared, entirely possible he infected other people as the hospital didn't isolate him on the ward. Babies do have some natural immunity when small but not always enough to protect them..

ImSoNotTelling · 04/07/2010 18:45

Nothing you can do unfortunately. I was worried too with DD1, it hasn't worried me with DD2 for some reason. Depending on where you live in the country, measles is still pretty rare. No idea about how much mumps is about.

ImSoNotTelling · 04/07/2010 18:46

Oh but YANBU to worry.

According to the nhs leaflet given to use by the nurse when ds had his jabs this week, mmr is given at 13 months as this is when the immunity they get from you starts to wear off.

In areas where there have been significant outbreaks, the second mmr dose is given earlier rather than waiting till 3/4 years.

Like the others have said there really isn't alot you can do to stop him catching it.

There's not much you can do other than breast feed. If you've had measles and mumps, you should offer some protection.

My DS got a mild case of mumps off his older sister when he was 9 months but I was bf and I had it as a child, so it wasn't a problem.

Totally understand the worry though.

chloebe · 04/07/2010 19:47

I bf my dd1 for 7 months, i live in an area where some people are ignorant enough to think their kids won't catch measles, mumps or rubella.
there was a massive outcry about that doctors study, and i know of some mothers from our surgery that pushed for single vaccines altho they were declined as they are not licensed in the uk, so just decided not to give their children the jab.

my dd1 was due to have her mmr exactly to the day of her 13 month bday, a week before she caught german measles/rubella I was 7 months pregnant, I wanted to slap the faces of those mother as she was very ill.

I understand your worry x

Its just that the nursery have had I think around 4 cases of measles or mumps, can't quite remember which and he seems so young.....hate the fact he is going, but its one day a week I keep telling myself.

I am breastfeeding. Does it really help, I know it makes a bit of a difference but with measles, mumps etc they seem so infectious?

Liek you say not much I can do, just worried.

Riven glad DD is fine.
chloebe poor you! So she had to have the MMR too after having at least one M! How annoying! You must have been really worried.
snickersnack was DS ok? Any after effects?
