AIBU to feel a bit cross to see so many people damaging their cars on a daily basis?!!

Maybe IABU but personally don't feel that I am!

Whenever I hear someone pulling up their hand brake without pressing the button in (and it makes that horrible sound) it makes me a bit cross as it is damaging their car. Surely they must know it is damaging it?? I remember my driving instructor telling me how damaging it was not to push the button in as it wears down all the little metal 'teeth' and can make the hand brake ineffective or even fail if it got worn down enough.

I mean, it's hardly an effort to push the button in and pull it up!! AIBU to feel a bit cross and want to tell them to do it properly so they don?t damage their car?!!

Why don't people push the button in? I can't understand it!! ( Sorry for the rant, think I am maybe a bit hormonal!)

Come the revolution, you'll have to pick a side, Hecate.

Fence sitting. Tsk.

My driving instructor told me that you should push the button in but it isn't true.

The hand brake in my DH's car doesn't set properly if you push the button in to set it.

The hand brake works on a rachet and is made of hardened steel. You are not damaging it by pulling it on without pushing the button.

YABU and need to chill a bit...

Our car doesn't have a normal handbrake - it's got a button that you push (sort of down by your left knee) to set and you just drive off to take the handbrake off - it's a pain if you're trying to navigate into a small space though because it takes the brake off every time you press the accelerator.

Was it you in the red Ford Ka that flashed me because I overtook them when they were going at 5mph over the speedbumps on our estate today?
I live with a car mechanic, and car mechanics always push the button.

Snigger: frequent top ups to keep the car lighter are the way forward. I only put in £2 worth every time and keep my car as light as a feather as a consequence.

rainbowfizz · 04/07/2010 08:07

But fluffyone what do they do with regards to putting their handbrake on???

Chil1234 · 04/07/2010 08:10

You should get a VW Passat... They've done away with the manual handbrake all together and replaced it with an button near the steering wheel. To release the handbrake you have to do a sort of gentle 'hill start' until the light goes off - which is fine unless you're in a rush - and then the bloody thing refuses to release. (Vorsprung durch technik, my arse). Three and a half years and over 50,000 miles later and it still catches me out.

Bring back the 'k-k-k-k-k-k' ratchet!!!

YABU and a bit barking to actually care what other people do to their own cars.

phoenixflower · 04/07/2010 08:51

purepurple - It's not so much strangers on the street that I care about, mainly friends and family... esp.people like my younger brother who would ask me for the money if it broke to fix it!
