yadnbu your dp is being extremely tight to complain about that

DingALongCow · 04/07/2010 10:38

I agree with Martha, the individual can choose to like whatever they want, be it shoes, handbags or tractor driving. The problem is when you take that personal enjoyment and generalise for an entire gender and other individuals e.g. shoes are important for girls and women's mental health, that they need shoes and handbags to live.

I have no objections at all to women who love shoes but I do object to the assumption that I should love these things just because I dont have a penis.

For what its worth while I loathe buying shoes for myself I do enjoy finding shoes for DD, she has four or five pairs to my two, but this is personal and I wouldnt say 'all mothers of girls love finding shoes for their daughters'. Sounds like you got a total bargain today OP, your DP shouldn't be criticising.

Gosh, do feminists really piss most people off? How depressing.

Mumcentreplus · 04/07/2010 11:12

but generally women like shoes and shoe buying..are we brainwashed at birth to desire footwear?..there are things that genders are attracted to...as a feminist I dont see pointing this out or having a jokey laugh about it being anti-feminist..of course all women dont like shoes and a healthy amount do and?

mumbar · 04/07/2010 11:18

and it was me who pointed out generally girls have more shoes than boys for outfit reasons but tbh my DS has more pairs than me as I actually have no interest in shoes or hand bags really.

Have trainers for work/ casual and flip flops for summer and boots for winter.

Use a large cotton handbag (asda/primarni ones!) as take out snacks, drinks, phone, wallet keys, my sunglasses, ds glasses, ds allergy meds at least when we are out for 1/2 day or more!!!

ime tho friends with dd's have a larger variety of types of shoe.

I think your DH/DP was being a little tight - I think you got excellent value. He would probably keel over if you were me and had amassed the following for DD;

2 pairs trainers (kickers and cheap ones)
2 pairs canvas shoes (converse and cheap)
2 pairs crocs (both sale prices)
3 pairs school shoes (1 full price, 1 next and 1 discounted)
1 pair Clarks boots (cheap website)
1 pair sandals (Boden, £7 in the sale last yr!)

DS;

1 Pair clarks shoes (ebay, cheap)
1 Pair Canvas (discount website)
1 Pair sandals
1 Pair Geox shoes (ebay, cheap)
1 Pair crocs (sale, would have been 2 but other pair just outgrown)

I don't have an issue with children having quite a few pairs as long as it's not breaking the bank. DD has ended up with loads of pairs (most of which will last 2 maybe 3 yrs at the rate she's growing) through ebay, shoesforkids.co.uk etc and rarely pay full price for any shoe. I wouldn't like to wear the same pair day in day out so I don't think the DC's should either. They say shoes should have a chance to air/dry out after wearing and should be worn every day.

oneofthosedays · 04/07/2010 11:35

'shouldn't be worn every day' I mean!

fartblossom · 04/07/2010 11:42

OMG OP, do I know you?

One of my friends yesterday on FB asked how many pairs of shoes her DD should have (it was about the same time this thread started). Her DP thinks she should only have one as she wont be in them long enough.

As to how many she should have, that depends what you need them for. Also how old they are.

emptyshell · 04/07/2010 12:14

Depends if she's just had a growth spurt and is likely to be able to wear them for a while or not in my opinion - no point dropping a load of cash if she's due another one and you'll only get a few weeks' wear outta them (or if it's sandals in the final days of the summer).

If you live near an outlet place the Clarks factory shops are usually worth a shufty as well (I've got crap feet and can't wear "fashion" shoes at all, or anything with heels so I'm usually confined to a few limited brands).

Wish my husband would BUY another pair of shoes - he lives in one pair of black leather trainers (always black leather trainers) until I condemn them as a biological hazard and threaten to leave him unless he replaces them... with another, identical pair of black, leather trainers. Not at all a creature of habit is my chap.

MarthaQuest · 04/07/2010 15:03

FWIW I like shoes, although not particularly more than I like tops or trousers or bracelets or whatever.

But I have a dd and , like a previous poster, I object to people assuming she MUST like shoes because of her gender. Makes women seem thick.

Martha you mentioned jewellery

ooohh mmmmm Shoes, handbags, and sparkly jewellery. Are women related to magpies do you think?

MarthaQuest · 06/07/2010 10:28

Maybe so, beammeup, after we are often referred to as birds.
