hopefully name changed for this but hvent before so i might not have done it properly

someone i know is in hospital wit her 10month old son who has very bad burns on his hands... she says she was getting a glass of water when the little boy followed her into the kitchen and pulled himself up with the cooker and burnt both his hands on the hob....

doesnt ring true to me....i wouldnt think he was tall enough for a start! hes a small 10 month old...

what does everyone else think?

That if he is in hospital there are peolpe trained to deal with this and if her story does not add up ss will get involved .

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 02/07/2010 14:05

I think the hospital will be looking into this.

soundssusstome · 02/07/2010 14:07

her facebook status is full of "cant wait to go home" "nurses are treating me like shit" " i wouldnt be treated like this if i was black"

My friends DS burnt the soles of his feet on a hob that was turned off but had been recently used

He was a great climber and had used an upturned plastic toy box to climb on the work surface, and sadly toddled across the hob...

Not knowing the height of the child you mention, but looking at how my little one can reach way above his head, I'd say it could happen.
Hope he makes a full recovery

As slushy says, they are trained in hospital to notice non-accidental injuries.

She sounds lovely tired

domesticdiva · 02/07/2010 14:11

Our local A&E notify the child's HV if they are seen for whatever reason in A&E (whom then do a follow up by phone), so like slushy said I'm sure if it was suss then it will be checked out by the appropriate people.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 02/07/2010 14:15

All hospitals have set policys's and procedures for suspected non-accidental injuries. The child is always admitted, social services are contacted and the child and carer are monitored. Children undergo a comprehensive medical assessment. I wouldn't read too much into this, I bet the mother is frightened aswell.

drloves · 02/07/2010 14:23

tablefor6 , spookily my ds2 did that also , when he was 3 .... i got funny looks and attitude from the A & E nurse .
Its possible that the 10 mth old did reach up and touch the hot hobs , especially if it was the front ones that were used.
I hope he recovers quickly

diddl · 02/07/2010 14:41

Oh-poor little fella!

I can see how it could happen though.

whoneedssleepanyway · 02/07/2010 14:44

when i think of some of the accidents my DCs or DCs of my friends have had some of them can sound very inplausible but little ones can get themselves into some real scrapes.

hope he is better soon poor thing.

hopalongdagger · 02/07/2010 14:44

I think it is possible, could there have been something in the kitchen that he stood on? If we've had an online delivery or something it can take a while before the kitchen's clear.

I'm sure the hospital will be looking into it, hope he recovers quickly though.

Table could have been near and he climbed and pulled up or somesuch.

There is another explanation that makes the situation look bad, such as cooking while holding him or putting him on worktop for moment next to the hob.

Though, he almost certainly is not tall enough for her account to be true don't think you can conclude much else.

GypsyMoth · 02/07/2010 16:43

i think its possible....my oven has a bottom pull down storage bit. little toes can easily stand on the top for leverage...but she needs some advice about safety. she should use back rings first....

prozacfairy · 02/07/2010 17:12

Poor little darling the hospital staff will most likely know if there's any need to involve SS. My poor DNephew got badly burned by a cup of tea on his arm agred 4 months and SS were all over our entire family wouldnt leave my Dsis and her DP alone for months. Neither was there when it happened as the baby was being looked after by a "friend" ("friend" coz he lied bout what happened to police, SS etc )
