To think this entire article in the Daily Mail is made up?

The premise of the whole article is that children nowadays are so spoilt that they are celebrating their birthday every six months. I refuse to believe that this has ever happened. And, no, the Queen doesn't count as a valid example.

bollocks

oh, I must be wrong in thinking that most of the daily hate mail is made up...

OnlyWantsOne · 01/07/2010 20:07

and Ive never known a parent celebrate like this... most odd

TrillianAstra · 01/07/2010 20:09

Probably the journalist has seen it once and decided it is a 'trend'.

I was born in May so have Christmas as my 6-month (ish) alternative

cathcat · 01/07/2010 20:09

I really hope it is not true. How hideous.

scurryfunge · 01/07/2010 20:10

Very made up in a very Daily Mail way.

CastleDouglas · 01/07/2010 20:11

Like most articles in the DM, it's an extreme example which is then assumed to be the norm.

clemettethedropout · 01/07/2010 20:12

I do half-birthday cards (ie a recycled card cut in half) and a half-birthday cake (we eat the other half the night before) for my two. No presents though!

TheCrackFox · 01/07/2010 20:13

I can't believe that there are people out there who are so gullible that they will believe it.

My DD is obviously a trend setter as she asked for this a couple of years ago. Was met with a firm refusal.

I've never known any kids actually have this.

FairyMum · 01/07/2010 20:18

I always have a cake at my half-birthday. You have to celebrate yourself as much as you can!

cornsilk5793 · 01/07/2010 20:20

nasty article

domesticdiva · 01/07/2010 20:21

I've always thought my poor sister should have a half birthday as hers is Christmas day and she always has a grump on saying people don't ever celebrate her birthday.

TheCrackFox · 01/07/2010 20:23

I would allow people who have a Christmas day/News years Day birthday another birthday.

My SIL has a mini-party for her sons in the Summer, because their birthdays fall in the Winter when it's usually wet and chilly. She gets a bouncy castle and has a BBQ.

peppapighastakenovermylife · 01/07/2010 20:25

I used to get my main present on my half birthday as my birthday was just after christmas and my parents couldnt afford one then.

But still got the same amount of presents and only one party etc.

babywrangler · 01/07/2010 20:25

My DCs have been asked to quite a few of these - always winter babies whose parents fancy a summer party. no canapes etc but very cupcakes and bunting in the garden. Definitely seems to be on the up.

TheCrackFox · 01/07/2010 20:27

But why can't they just have a Summer party - why do they have to tag a birthday to it?

OP posts:
cornsilk5793 · 01/07/2010 20:37

who cares? Mothers day/fathers day is like an extra birthday

SuziKettles · 01/07/2010 20:43

My grandpa used to take himself out for a pie and a pint every month as a "birthday" treat to celebrate still being alive (he was 90 though)

inchhighprivateeye · 01/07/2010 20:56

I think the writer has got confused by children with Christmas birthdays who sometimes have summer parties.

The DM should try harder with the made up stories. There's not even any attempt to verify this - where are the spurious statistics?

mylittlepeanut · 01/07/2010 21:56

My children are both August babies which means that they will never celebrate their Birthday at school taking cupcakes etc in on the actual day. They are at school in the USA now and have both celebrated a half birthday this year whereby they took cupcakes into school to share with their class and wore the 'Birthday Hat' for the day. They did not get any gifts but were given the special Birthday duties in the class on their 1/2 Birthday. The only children who are allowed to celebrate their 1/2 Birthday are those with Birthdays which fall over the huge summer break.

SirBoobAlot · 01/07/2010 22:00

Of course its made up. Its in the Daily Fail. Have you not heard?

choccyp1g · 01/07/2010 22:00

Actually my son has had a "Half-birthday" since he was old enough to understand the idea. The reason was that he has an indoor (depths of winter) party for his friends, and then a day out with me in the summer, to somewhere like Legoland or the seaside.

I think it will fade out as he gets older, because a day out with Mum probably gets boring once you reach about 10.
