I just can't get past the image of them flying off and decapitating someone

YANBU they are freaky.

Reminds me of that Twin Peaks film for some reason...

PortiaNovmerriment · 01/07/2010 12:48

Or Apocalypse Now and Martin Sheen going nuts and doing kung fu moves in your mirror...

whoneedssleepanyway · 01/07/2010 12:54

my friend went travelling to south america and one night she and her bf at the time woke up and there was some kind of rodent nibbling his toe, he flung it off his foot and it got caught in the ceiling fan....

HoopyFroodDude · 01/07/2010 12:55

YANBU indiana Jones and the strangulation scene terrified me

FreakoidOrganisoid · 01/07/2010 13:05

Ah I feel vindicated now

My friend was having a go at me for not leaving the fan on in my dc's room overnight but I just can't do it! A normal fan yes I would, but the ceiling fan only goes on before bed to cool the room down then off once they are in there. Am lol at the kung fu moves though

Blimey I'm a bit nervous of them.

I'm also frightened of being in a situation when I am on top of a helicopter.

I have never been near a hellicopter nor am I likely to be but I am still frightend that one day I may end up in such a situation.

FreakoidOrganisoid · 01/07/2010 13:09

YANBU. I have one in my living room (we didn't put it there) and even when it's boiling i wont have it on with the DDs in the room. Completely daft but there you go!

CoronaAndLime · 01/07/2010 16:41

Me too!!

When there is one on, I just cant relax or take my eyes off it.

upahill · 01/07/2010 16:56

I'm a bit edgie about stand up ones. I'm frightened that my hair may get caught up in it. Again like in totally irrational helicopter fear this is ridculas because my hair is lucky to touch the top of my shoulders. It is not likely to tangled up in anything least of all a fan that is never likely to be in close range!!

FreakoidOrganisoid · 01/07/2010 19:15

Like the name CoronaAndLime, could just fancy one of those

porcamiseria · 01/07/2010 19:52

i am not too fond of them either

alana39 · 01/07/2010 20:00

YANBU I once had to teach a course in a masonic hall and they had one on the ceiling that wobbled as it span. Found it very hard to concentrate thinking that at any moment several of the participants might be decapitated - especially as none of the really annoying ones looked as if they were in the firing line.

emptyshell · 01/07/2010 20:02

I miss mine my old flat had one above my bed and it was luuuuuush in weather like this (couldn't sleep with the window open as it was a fully opening window right behind my bed in a ground floor flat so I had visions that someone would reach in and slit my throat while I was sleeping) so the fan was gorgeous.

CrunchyNutCornflake · 01/07/2010 20:10

I really try to keep my distance from ceiling fans. They're just odd . I so don't get what's so fantastic about some flat plasterboard and a light fitting. SO it's got some artex, or even a ceiling rose? So what?!

Ceiling fans are dodgy . I'm terrified one's going to jump out from behind a tree waving a flick-knife.

violethill · 01/07/2010 20:11

YABU - have you ever actually heard of one spontaneously flying off and decapitating someone?

CoronaAndLime · 01/07/2010 20:46

There is a first time for everything Violethill

I'm also really scared of those filter things in swimming pools.
I think I once saw (on tv) a girls hair get sucked into one and she almost drowned

Pleased Freakoid likes my new(ish) name

southeastastra · 01/07/2010 20:48

it would have to be going round some knots before flying off and decapitating someone surely

Lonicera · 01/07/2010 20:49

Mythbusters tested the decapitation by ceiling fan theory and it was busted

I sleep safely under mine

Anifrangapani · 01/07/2010 20:52

We had them at school - we used to put our sandwiches/ board rubbers/ random objects on them and wait for the teachers to turn them on.... many hours of childish amusement

FreakoidOrganisoid · 02/07/2010 17:48

It doesn't help that the one in my kitchen appears to be a bit loose and so wobbles a lot. I think that adds to my fear of flying off-ness.
