to think GP's should be far more clued up about Mirena coils and their potential side effects?

Because according to my GP, my rapid weight gain (10 lbs in 7 weeks - eek), painful breasts, teariness, hair loss and permanent bloated feeling can be nothing whatsoever to do with the fact I've recently had the Mirena put in. Not even if the symptoms have only come on since having it fitted, and are exactly what always happens when I try the pill or any hormonal contraception.

Aaaarrrggggh. I originally went in for the copper coil, and felt a bit arm twisted into trying the Mirena - now I'm stuck feeling rotten until they can (grudgingly) take it out. Why does my GP think she knows my body better than me? It's so frustrating, especially as I asked about side effects before having it done and was told how extremely rare they were!!

I have never posted on a forum before but I feel I really must as a result of this evil contraceptive called the Mirena Coil.
Thankfully, I only had it in for 8 months & to think that in that time, it turned me from a happy person into a monster, who was starting to think there was nothing in life to live for (bearing in mind, I am a mother of 3 wonderful children!). Was forever ttearful.

I really do believe that its because of hormone based contraceptives such as the Mirena (no matter how low the dose is!), which might be accountable for the huge rise in depression in women of a child bearing age
(and those most likely to use the Mirena) and GPs dealing with it simply by handing out anti-depressants like smarties.

This is because GPs are so dismissive of a link between the Mirena and depression.
This really should not be the case when so many women are reporting similar symptoms.

As well as depression, which I had never suffered from, i gained over 1 1/2 stone in weight - which no matter what I did could not be shifted due to a monstrous appetite for sweet & sugary food.

I had a constant bloated tummy, which led a parent at my kids school to ask when I was expecting child no. 4!

Nausea - similar to morning sickness.

Complete and utter loss of libido, to the extent that I thought I no longer loved my husband & might therefore have to consider divorce!

The last straw was when I started to suffer from debilitating back pain - such that I couldn't get out of bed without being in agony or get into the car, without my son lifting my legs in.

I only connected all these ailments to the coil after only accidently coming across posts, through researching what was causing the back pain.

In my opinion, there appears to be what could be termed a conspiracy by GPs refusing to believe that in some women the coil produces some distressing & debilitating side effects. I was practically bullied by my GP into having the coil inserted in the 1st place & then he refused to remove it when I asked him to - I had to bypass him by getting the nurse to remove it!

Have only had it removed for 4 weeks now, but already bloatedness has gone, feeling happier, although sex drive still low, not eating as much & my back within days of having the evil thing removed, started to get better!

Ladies, for some the MC works fine, for others like myself, it can become a living nightmare - all I ask is if you are thinking of having it inserted, that you at least be aware of its potential side-effects & are not caught unaware. I didn't read the info leaflet given to me after insertion - in fact I threw it away as I did not expect something recommended by my GP as safe to cause me so much pain & heartache.

Please, we are intelligent women, who know our bodies better than anyone, doctor or no doctor, so lets listen to it when its not happy and not allow our concerns to be dismissed out of hand by GPs!

When I went to my GP to arrange getting an implant, she also tried to hard sell the Mirena coil to me- there was no way I was going to let them talk me into it because I know three people who had trouble on the Mirena coil and one of them fell pregnant as well.

Readyisknitting · 07/02/2011 09:39

Very interesting thread. I was referred to the FPC for the implant, but after discussing the effects the progesterone only pill had had, I was recommended the copper coil. I love it, I am me, and although I do now have cramps, and a slightly heavier period, with a flood day, like someone else described, I wouldn't go back. Didn't experience the hard sell about mirena though. Wonder if that was because I'd had a year on my own, and so no sex, and no contraceptives, and then started the pill?

Pannacotta · 07/02/2011 09:50

I was offered a Mirena coil as I have very heavy periods but declined as I know I react very badly to hormonal contraception.

expat you mention endometrial ablation, is this good for reducing blood loss? Has anyone else had this done?

BuntyPenfold · 07/02/2011 10:28

A friend of mine had endometrial ablation and says it was the best thing she has ever done and she wished she had gone for it years ago.

All the best.

My gynacologist has suggested a mirena coil for my perimenopause symptoms/pms. I am a bit reluctant as have never used any contraception other than condoms.

I am trying alternative therapies such as agnus cactus first.

Mirena was a nightmare for me as well!

Had it fitted 6 weeks after my youngest dd's birth. For the next 12 weeks had constant bleeding, cramps, was irritable, mood swings and weight gain.

Made me really stressed and unhappy. Tried taking tablets to stop the bleeding but they only worked for a few days, then it was back.

Insisted on having it out after 12 weeks as could not cope anymore- though was a good contraception as was feeling like shit ,bleeding etc so no chance of sex for us!!!!!!! Grin

Had the contraceptive injection the day I had the implant out and have had no problems since ,well apart from pain from the damn ovarian cyst I have covering entire left ovary but that should be removed soon.

Would never have the mirena again

looblylu · 07/02/2011 11:04

since having Mirena (instead of Depo) i've lost over a stone without any sort of diet or additional exercise which is nice

however i also have weird day long periods about 8 times a month Hmm
also, i now bleed when i'm stressed...does this happen to anybody else as i realise it sounds stupid?

occasional bouts of hip pain (only twice in the last 6 months but AWFUL for about 5 days each time requiring a lot of painkillers)

and random early labour type stomach cramps

i'm running out of contraceptives to try so i'm going to stick with it but you are not being unreasonable at all OP
My doctor not only didnt warn me about any of these side effects and also skirted around the fact that the 100% non-failure rate doesnt include the coils that fell out, moved, perforated the uterus etc.

so its 100% non failure...except the ones that failed... Hmm

I had very heavy periods which meant I was very aneamic. The Mirena was mentioned initially but when I said I'd never got on well with the Pill, the DR said the Mirena was out of the question because of all the side effects caused by the hormones in the coil.

So some Drs do agree that Mirena has bad side effects, why don't they all know????

BranchingOut · 07/02/2011 11:17

I must admit that I had a copper coil inserted as a result of reading similar stories online years ago. It was in for 7 years and I had it removed when I wanted to consider having a baby. The copper coil was fine, but did cause very long periods. I also suspect that I was probably a bit anaemic at times.

I then began using Persona - natural family planning along with condoms - and feel much happier about that side of things.

www.persona.info/uk/

If anyone is interested in using Persona but is put off by the up front cost, remember that you can get the monitor and test sticks much cheaper online and on ebay.

OTheHugeManatee · 07/02/2011 12:26

I flatly refused to have a Mirena, because my experience with hormone-based oral contraceptives had been uniformly nasty (weight gain, depression, zero sex drive etc etc). That said, though, I went to a specialist clinic rather than a GP surgery and I suspect the information and guidance I got was a bit more balanced and well-informed as a result. They just quizzed me a bit about whether it was a long-term relationship and how I'd been on the Pill, and then installed my copper coil.

Though it hurt like bejeezus getting it installed and my periods are sometimes a bit longer overall it's easily the best contraceptive I've ever used.

I'm sure Mirena works for some people, but my hormones are lively enough as it is without having Big Pharma tinkering with them as well Grin. I'm sure I'm not the only one. Doctors should be more honest about side effects.

Asteria · 07/02/2011 12:47

Oh lord! I'm with all you who have had nightmare times with the Mirena - mine nearly killed me - they insisted on it even though I nearly had a stroke on the pill...
Sadly Dr's are very quick to bung us with all manner of filthy chemicals and then have to give us more to counteract the side effects. No wonder we are all so messed up!

I have the copper coil now - my only option as I'm allergic to latex and the spermicide they put on condoms give me thrush [vomity emoticon]

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 24/02/2011 12:51

Just found this thread as have been to see GP today to discuss scan results after very painful periods. I have a bulky uterus suggesting fibroidal changes and one whole little fibroid. Doctor has suggested Mirena and assures me that hormones are localised and very easy to remove. I have reacted badly to the pill in the past with various symptoms including weight gain which never got lost.

Am now finally losing weight, 46.5lbs and more to go and will be having my gallbladder removed when I have lost all my weight and really don't want to effect this in anyway. Am very worried now reading all this. I did ask what else could try if Mirena didn't work and she said Endometrial Ablation, am now thinking might push for this but don't know much about it. Has anyone any thoughts on this ? Thanks very much.

foreverondiet · 24/02/2011 14:43

I have one and I love it. Very light occasional periods. Am on a diet after DS2, no trouble loosing weight. Have had it in for 4 months, happy so far. You have to try and see, works for some.

solo · 24/02/2011 14:47

I felt like the Mirena wrecked my life in lots of ways. YANBU, they should give us proper information well before 'choosing' to have it.

amiheartless · 24/02/2011 14:51

Argh Sympathies, not the coil but implant and pre child the pill was not well informed at all, i think they just rush you along

Undertone · 24/02/2011 15:29

Implant was nightmare for me. I feel like a new woman now I've had mine taken out last month. My friends have even noticed that I'm 'happier' and have more energy. Libido back too Blush

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 24/02/2011 15:49

Oh dear, I know some people are fine with it but this is making me think I'd rather not risk it . Think I'll mull it over a bit then speak to GP again.

MothershipG · 24/02/2011 16:51

I'm on my 2nd Mirena and have to say I love it!

I used to feel like I spent half my life bleeding, ok slight exaggeration, but my periods did last 7/8 days and now nothing! It's absolute bliss!

Guess I'm one of the lucky ones as I have experienced no noticeable side effects. I got it when I stopped BF'ing DD, I was 38, I wonder if age makes a difference? I had also been fine on the pill previously so it is obviously contra-indicated if you have had an adverse reaction to hormonal contraceptives, no matter what some GP's seem to think!
