what i had been doing till this morning was having cereal with the girls then doing them some toast and leaving them to eat their toast while i went for a quick shower (strapped the younger one in high chair so she couldn't get out).

anyway my friend told me yesterday that her little boy had choked on a croissant the other day so i decided this morning not to leave them eating without me and put the TV on for them and the little one fell off the sofa and has an massive egg on the front of her head and bloody nose ...

aghhhhhhh i am a rubbish mother, maybe i will just smell and not have showers in the future (please don't tell me to have a shower before they get up as the little one wakes at 520 every day!!)

I would get a bumbo and put the baby in that while you shower.

Have you got blackout curtains in the baby's room? Sometimes having blackout conditions stops them from waking up with the sunrise... Just a suggestion.

playpen

whoneedssleepanyway · 02/07/2010 06:37

indie37 yikes that sounds scarey, DD2 is turning into a little houdini so that is not beyone the realms of possibility.

think it will be back to showers with everyone in the bathroom, i thought DD1 could be trusted downstairs on her own, until i discovered yesterday her artwork all over the brown leather sofa in biro.

don't people use playpens any more ???

I used to have a travel cot thingy that doubled as a playpen

It was a lifesaver for those few minutes throughout the day when you just had to get on with stuff

whoneedssleepanyway · 02/07/2010 07:45

don't have space for one AnyFucker, two up two down house with two kids, bursting at the seems as it is.

Playpen.

Or get up early and shower whilst kids still asleep. I always liked to be up and dressed before DD or DH were awake. If you go down this route though, be warned that it may lead to 5am showers!

I need freakishly small amounts of sleep to feel fine!

wastingaway · 02/07/2010 07:53

Til DS could sit up properly, I had him in his bouncy chair in the bathroom with me.
Then it was the travel cot/playpen solution, absolute lifesaver.
Once he was too big for that I'd bring him in with me.

I leave him in front of the telly now, and my showering speed has improved.

I used to sit my wee ones in their pushchair in the bathroom or put them in a travel cot which I used as a playpen.

smokinaces · 02/07/2010 08:22

I leave DS1 (3.11) and DS2 (2.3) with raisins and toys infront of the TV. Normally ends up a big mess, but my bathroom is downstairs off the kitchen and I shower with the door open so I can hear them. On work days I get up at sparrows fart and shower before they get out of bed.

Raisins are my limit on food to be left though. DS1 choked on an apple the other week and it scared the heebies out of me.

When mine were young and mobile I had shower or bath when they were either in bed on an evening or husband around. When just 1 kid I'd stick him in playpen for quick shower.

Squitten · 02/07/2010 12:01

I have my shower in the evening when DS is sleeping. Makes the mornings a lot easier too - just get up, get dressed and go!

DreamTeamGirl · 02/07/2010 12:08

LOVE Snobear's answer!!

My showers take seconds, so its not like I am leaving for long- honestly its quicker than going into kitchen to make a cuppa tea or unload dishwasher and we were all on one floor in those days. I would shower (less than a minute) then go back into lounge in towel (with curtains drawn) to talk/ observe while I dressed

I would go with putting the littlest on floor to watch tv if it were me- I know how hard it is when you are doing it on your own!!

How old is the biggest one?

missnevermind · 02/07/2010 12:26

Take the high chair into the bathroom with toys on the tray - no food.

Put kids in empty bath while you shower if it is separate cubical

nicolamumof3 · 02/07/2010 12:30

i used to stairgate top of stairs and close all doors, or as bonsoir suggested bath instead?

chiccadee · 02/07/2010 12:32

chuck a load of (waterproofish) toys on the bathroom floor and leave the children to it (baby in a bouncer chair).

If that doesn't work, sing nursery rhymes at the top of your voice to entertain, while you shampoo your hair. The Grand Old Duke of York is great for doing your legs, honest.

missnevermind · 02/07/2010 12:35

I take a bath with the door open as bathroom is downstairs.
Run the bath early, get in when you are ready. Just as quick as a shower and you can hear what is happening and DC can come and talk to you if they want. DS is 18mths.

JoandMax · 02/07/2010 12:51

I take DS1 in bathroom with me (nearly 2) with some toys, or usually he will empty out all the drawers, sing, spin in circles etc. I've taken him in with me every morning since he was born so he's pretty good, if I'm having a lazy day he has also been known to point up the stairs saying "mummy, shower!"

I either put DS2 (15 weeks) in his bouncy chair on the floor or if he's asleep in his cot just take monitor in wth me.

Meglet · 02/07/2010 12:58

I always shower in the evening when they are in bed.
