To be fed up being sworn at so much?

I am really starting to dread going to work. I am looking for something else but no luck yet. Being part time doesn't even hep any more.

I always try and help people and be polite. I admit that I sometimes get it wrong but it is never for the lack of trying. I just wish I could have some rights for a change.

blimey what do you do?

compo · 30/06/2010 20:27

where do you work?

I work with the public and if they're abusive we're allowed to put a hand up and say we won't serve them if they swear at us etc
we can also ban them if they go too far

IMoveTheStars · 30/06/2010 20:30

do you have an HR department?

wahwah · 30/06/2010 20:34

You do have rights and you can assert them. I do not understand how anyone can allow themselves to be treated like this, but I don't know anything further about your work...

xstitch · 30/06/2010 20:36

I work in the NHS. I have a duty of care. If I say anything I will just be told to man up. If the people swearing at me have special needs or dementia it doesn't bother me. Its others who have no medical reason for shouting and swearing swearing that get me down.

What area of the NHS do you work?

You still have rights

The NHS has a 'zero tolerance' policy does it not? (Did when I worked for it a few years back)

booyhoo · 30/06/2010 20:38

i thought the NHS had a zero tolerance policy?

rockinhippy · 30/06/2010 20:41

Sadly I can think of one profession or environment where this happens regularly & despite having those rights as an employee the "customers" rights will always outweigh your own, so nothing can be done

if I'm right & your working in a School, then I feel for you, my good friend is currently signed off work for stress for exactly this reason, no answers I'm afraid, but holidays coming soon, so hopefully some time off can help you grow the very thick skin it seems you need to work in some Schools

Alouiseg · 30/06/2010 20:41

We need more people in the NHS to refuse to accept swearing and abuse. Can you give us a clue as to what you do?

xstitch · 30/06/2010 20:43

Offically yes, just doesn't feel like it lately. I can never forget my first boss' line: "You are a professional and as such have no rights, chin up and take it" Been to afraid to do anything since then even though that was a long time ago.

I know what you mean, I had to spend an evening in the admissions ward once, whilst waiting for a bed. Never been so upset in my life.
There was an alcoholic heavy smoker admitted who emitted a stream of filth to every nurse because she wasn't allowed a drink or a fag.

A confused elderly man kept wandering in with his underwear round his ankles.

A lady who screamed "NO, NO, NO" approx every 15 minutes through the night.

Didn't get a wink of sleep and I was in for an investigation into cluster migraines.

Don't know how they all kept calm and sane...it felt positively dangerous at one point.

rockinhippy · 30/06/2010 20:46

I'm slow at typing today aren't I,....

as its the NHS I'm amazed that your employers take that slack stand, around here, unless its SN, if you don't treat staff with respect you'll be thrown out.................. as already said, you DO, still have rights, maybe you should have an forget word....annonymous chat with ACAS

Alouiseg · 30/06/2010 20:50

As much as I love and appreciate the Nhs I can't help but feel we have so little respect for it and the people who work in it. We need an attitude change if it is to survive.

xstitch · 30/06/2010 20:52

I have been under a lot of stress recently outside work and I guess that has made me more sensitive. I'm not sure things have really changed that much its just I feel I have had enough then I feel guilty for being weak.

Your old manager sounds like a twat, tbh

But is hard to speculate properly without knowing exactly what it is you do?

Alouiseg · 30/06/2010 20:58

Can you carry a dictaphone and record the worst offenders. They don't deserve care, attention or treatment.

I worked in the city on a trading floor. Swearing at people was a normal occurrence..........but I could give it back without repercussions. You should be able to deny your services to anyone who can't be civil.

I'll gladly hover behind you and sniper rifle people who are vile to you.
