AIBU to be considering giving epilation another try?

I currently shave underarms & legs, & have my bikini line waxed. About 6 years ago I decided to give epilation a try but found it so painful, even with a glass of wine beforehand & doing it while watching Neighbours (the tv show, not the people next door) to distract me, that I took it back to Argos* for a refund. Just after DS was born I gave epilation another go, but again was so wussy that I ended up EBaying it, for a profit no less. Every cloud, and all that...

Fastforward 4 years & epilators are on offer at the mo & I'm tempted yet again to give them another shot, thinking that the technology might have improved, making them less painful. AIBU considering giving them another shot?

*yep, I'm right classy me

stick to wax for your bikini line, shave your pits but definitely give your legs another go at the epilator - it does get easier, and it's not unlike waxing anyway. epilate after a bath when your skin is a bit softer anyway - it probs will sting a bit more if they're used to being shaved.

clearly i'm a classy bird too - did mine tonight and they are lovely and smooooooooooove

YABU because there is this new 'painless' taser gun type thingy out now (think it's by Phillips, called a lumina, or something like that). It uses light therapy and costs about £400 (which is equivalent to about eight salon leg and underarm waxes). I can't afford one so I strongly suggest you buy one and then flog it at a huge loss on Ebay. To me .

broccoli I'm classy as I bought my 1st epilator from Argos, classiest of classy stores & home of Elizabeth Duke jewellery - the jewellery of choice for all Jeremy Kyle participants.

seven If I win the lottery I'm definitely going to have laser hair removal. And invisalign. But until said lottery win, £400 is out of the question. Unless you fancy going halves..?

Cuba, I could probably just about manage a 16th. So if we can find 14 other MNers to go in with us, we're on! We could all take turns and post it on. We'd have to be very democratic about it though, say, one half leg, and pass it on, a sort of epilation collective. We should all be permanently hair-free by about 2020 .

I wouldnt bother trying again if you have already tried twice.

I got a boots home laser thing (ipl) and its good but it takes a while to do. I def noticed a great improvement. However...I stopped after a few weeks as was going on holiday and then never did it again. The hair started to grow back, tho its nowhere near as bad as it was, but that may be as I didnt do the whole 12 weeks - I maybe mananged 6-7.

This morning I had my second treatment in a salon. Its "pain-free" (unless you missed a hair when shaving then it hurts...prob similar pain to epilation but only for a second) Im getting full legs, bikini line and undearms done. Its £1200 (80% off) for 6 treatments which will take about a year to complete. The results it took me 6 weeks to get at home were the same as the first treatment.

Do try again - I'm a recent convert to the epilator after failing at the pain barrier twice before - has made this summer so much better for me. I have worked out the trick is little and often - get legs waxed first - then maintain as needed with epilator - I am very hairy, had legs waxed a couple of months ago and now epilate before I get my legs out or every couple of days, just a quick tidy up. Really not very painful on short hair. So nice to avoid stubble.

I do my underarms and it makes me feel faint! It really hurts IMO but it has definitely got easier and the benefits (cost, convenience) are huge!

whoneedssleepanyway · 30/06/2010 06:52

YABU i had one of these and i used it a handful of times, it was horrific and earned the nickname the lawnmower.

i have been having my legs and bikini waxed for over 10 years now and it is not painful at all and the hairs grow back really finely. In the summer i sometimes now use the veet strips myself if i need to tidy my legs up a bit but don't need full salon wax.

Why would do you not have your legs waxed?

CubaCat · 30/06/2010 10:17

Can't afford the salon treatment until I get the lottery win, unfortunately. I don't wax my legs because I hate the 'growing it' phase that you have to do before it's long enough to wax - it's bad enough with the bikini line, let alone legs. Hmmm, still not sure...

Lasering is a great alternative. And it isnt so expensive. FInd someone who runs a business from home much cheaper than high st salon.

I get my pits done, cost about £250 for 6 sessions, and I havent been back now for 4 months and there is minimal growth like 3 hairs! Once you've had 6 sessions you only need to go twice a year at a cost of £30 -£40 per session.

Save up and get lasered! With the new lasers it is pretty much permanent, saving loads of money in the long run. I am in the middle of getting my bikini line done as I simply couldnt stand the agony of waxing, the ingrown hairs, the growing back period and generally yeti like appearance. It is working a treat already and I only wish I did it years ago!
