DS has been on nursing strike since Monday. He's 7mo. I'm contemplating offering tonight and tomorrow morning, but if he doesn't take it then, I'm shutting up shop. I'd still express, but feel totally stressed out with his not feeding and just want the situation resolved somehow. AIBU?

I am sure the heat has a big effect . the babies hot and your body is hot. my baby totally went off bf at about the same age in hot weather do you have air co or a fan or can you find a really cool place to feed - maybe it helps ?

FionaSH · 29/06/2010 20:32

I've just tried to dreamfeed, but he wasn't interested at all. I have a fan in his nursery, but it's still quite warm. I'm going to keep expressing and keep trying for now and keep my fingers crossed. Thanks for all your help everyone.

If it's heat related could you take a cool bath with him?

FionaSH · 29/06/2010 20:41

secunda - my gut feel is that we've never fed in the bath before so that, plus him relearning how to feed might be a bit much new stuff for him, but I shall try it tomorrow. I'll give anything a go!!

I understand how you feel. I didn't know about nursing strikes when I was bfing my DD1, and I thought my heart would break when she just started rejecting it one day. I had no idea that it happens cos no one I knew in RL knew anything about it. Her reaction was horrible too - pushing me away, SCREAMING, arching her back and struggling to jump off me etc., it really felt like she hated me and didn't want to be near me. Luckily a mum I knew online had the same thing happen to her and said to keep offering without forcing and DD1 was drinking away as normal in a few days. She carried on till 18 months when she gradually self-weaned. I think you need to keep with it and it'll be alright soon.

megapixels THANK-YOU It's so good to hear from someone it's happened to, and that it worked out. I don't feel "special" to him anymore, and as he won't take a bottle either we no longer have any cuddle time he just wriggles off when I try to have a cuddle.
I'll stick with it and hopefully he'll get through this stage soon!

I think you could do as follows:

do you want to continue BF? then follow advice on here and hang on in there

do you want to stop? If so fair play, you've had good innings, close the bar!

FWIW advice like: i think its early days to stop, he is very young and still needs the milk. Is well intentioned but biased. The WHO say minium 6 months, and Op has done 7. dont give her a guilt trip!!!!!

in fact people have such strong advice on BF here I am surpised you asked!!!!

whatever, DONT FEEL GUILTY

wastingaway · 02/07/2010 13:48

Porca, she's posted that the nursing strike is over.

Its actually worked out better than it was before (touch wood) - he's having a boob feed in the morning, then has really quickly started drinking from his beaker - totally amazing! So he is having an evening milk feed from that. Water from his beaker during the day.

I appreciated all the advice I was given, it just helped me work out what I wanted. At the end of the day I'll do what I want anyway, but it made me consider things from different view points.
