DH caught DS trying to touch an electric fan. He went way beyond the usual "you'll cut your fingers off" lecture, telling him that Kerry from CBeeBees touched a fan and lost her arm. He was really pleased with himself for having come up with this. I am absolutely horrified by his callousness and am having a real "I can't believe I married this idiot" moment. Not to mention that I will be the one fielding the inevitable questions from DS on this tomorrow -- which are sure to be asked in a loud voice, in a public place. I am really .

here
she's not really blonde!

What she said^^ In the first paragraph.

There is no one story as to how people come by their disabilities, and I am pretty certain that the information your DH has given your under-6? should not adversely impact his learning about differences.

Just as there are different learning styles so are there different teaching styles. What's your DH's? lol

toccatanfudge can you read this?

YABU - for not raising the issue at the time - don't you communicate?

jonicomelately · 29/06/2010 10:10

Your ds is having a seventies childhood. we were told things like this all the time. YANBU but I think it's funny.

The worst possible thing you could do is tell your DS that his Dad made it up and is an idiot. Far more damaging than the well intentioned mistake that your DH made.

I think you should both sit down with him later and DH can re-explain with the emphasis on how worried he was about DS getting hurt.

Reallytired · 29/06/2010 10:21

I think your DH is a loving father, although prehaps a little bit misguided. It is unfair to describe him as calous. I expect he was a bit shocked.

If it comes up in conversation you can say that his father was mistaken why that particular person has an arm missing, however people have lost limbs from playing about with fans.

If you are serious about your marriage, you shouldn't call your DP an idiot.

Not really stroppy. The bit I saw she was talking about being out and about and the things men ask her, like can she have sex and that sort of thing. She was on it a bit before but I missed what she said.

I wouldn't even bring it up with your DS. The chances are he will have forgotten all about it, although hopefully the overall message will stick. If he brings it up, you can explain that his dad was just frightened for him, and loves him very much, so even though it wasn't true, he just didn't want to see DS hurt. Don't tell him his dad's a tosser.

I may once have said something stupid when I caught DS2 sticking a metal table knife through the cooling vents in the back of the TV, years ago. Fear does strange things to us parents.
