I want to take my 14m in a hotel swimming pool

Am I going to get all kinds of flak for this? It's a gym/pool in the hotel. Open for public 'members' of the gym. So not just hotel people.
Dh went .
But I think it'll be ok? They aren't typically dirty are they? And she'll have on the swimmers nappy. Or will the likelihood of the pee still be a problem you think?

Of course it's fine. If she has a time of day when she usually does a poo, try to go after that.

My dd went swimming in a variety of gym/hotel/spa pools from around six months old. Never had any problems.

gingernutlover · 28/06/2010 14:19

are you a member? is your dd a member?

rookiemater · 28/06/2010 14:21

Sorry am not getting your problem. I have taken DS in all sorts of pools from the age of 2 months.

Hotel pools no cleaner/dirtier than any other pools as far as I know, although I am sure some mumsnetter with encylopedic knowledge of bacteria ratios will arrive with interesting facts soon.

Swim nappies, yes not sure if they keep the wee in myself either, not to mention the episode of the exploding poo filled one I once had to deal with, still feel a bit guilty for the other swimmers in my defence I didn't know it was poo filled until I took him out, tried to take it off and got covered all over in dripping faeces, yummm.

Anywy, will be no problem to take her to hotel pool.

ShatnersBassoon · 28/06/2010 14:21

Are you worried about her polluting the pool with wee, or that there will be other people's wee in the pool?

NETTEYJC · 28/06/2010 14:22

I don't see a problem at all, not if she has a proper swimming nappy on.

bebemoohatessnot · 28/06/2010 14:22

We're staying at the hotel. I thought to take her in this evening for a swim before supper to try and tire her out.
Dh says that real swimmers will be there trying to use the pool and won't want us thrashing around or dd peeing...

We go to a gym attached to a pool and there are often little visitors in swim nappies.

Don't take her in if she's got a runny tummy or likely to be sick though - the pool where DD had her swimming lessons occasionally had to close for cleanout after a kid had puked in it.

rookiemater · 28/06/2010 14:24

Ignore DH, hotel pools are for guests to use, you aren't planning to sashay her the entire way around the thing I would imagine so plenty room for real swimmers. Does your DH not understand the concept of swim nappies ?

gingernutlover · 28/06/2010 14:24

unless it specifically says its an adults only session then there shouldnt be a problem.

If it is, then maybe your dh should look after dd while you go for a swim.

ShatnersBassoon · 28/06/2010 14:24

Ah, well you'll only be able to judge that by going down to the pool and seeing how busy it is. People won't care as long as you're not stopping them from swimming.

People weeing in pools is a fact of life. The chemicals are put in to make wee safe to swallow.

saslou · 28/06/2010 14:28

I don't think that other swimmers should take priority over you and your baby. You are guests at the hotel and have an equal right to use the pool. Babies do pee, but there are chemicals in the water to counteract this. People swim in leisure centre pools even though babies have peed in there too probably. Get the swim nappy and don't worry. Have a lovely time swimming with your baby. She has to learn to swim and why shouldn't she enjoy the nice experience of a hotel pool?

GrimmaTheNome · 28/06/2010 14:28

Do stay out of the way of serious swimmers doing laps - parents enchanted by their PFBs antics oblivious to people swimming in totally predictable straight lines aren't always smiled benignly upon. Apart from which if they are like my short sighted DH they may not even see you till too late!

bebemoohatessnot · 28/06/2010 14:28

Kids definitely can go in it. Though I was going to double check 'times' just encase they do close it for some reason.
Dd 's not been ill besides a sneezey cough.
I think I shall be 'brazen' and take her even against husband approval .
I didn't think I was mad.

Why should you and DD not be able to use the pool? THem 'real' swimmers should get out of the way

Seriously she is 14m old so will spend most of the time in your arms or at least in arms each so you won't be spoiling anyone elses fun.

letsblowthistacostand · 28/06/2010 14:38

Hotel pools EXCELLENT for babies. In the late afternoon you'll be the only ones in there. As for bothering the other swimmers, unless it has proper lanes and all, no one will be doing anything other than bobbing around. I love taking my children in hotel pools and they love it too! Is always one of the high points of any hotel stay.

whomovedmychocolate · 28/06/2010 14:44

Recite this phrase to your DH 'I'll pop down and take the baby for a swim while you watch the cricket/tennis' and I can almost guarantee his objections will wither on the vine!

Seriously, there are a few issues:

(1) There will most likely not be a changing table and getting changed can be hard with a small baby in tow;
(2) Ditto disposal of soaked swim nappies (too fat to go in san-disposal -voice of experience)

Recommend investing in a dressing gown for you so you don't freeze while you dress the baby.

I've taken mine swimming in some v nice hotels, generally empty after 8am and before 7pm.

If you want to avoid too many nasty adult lane swimmers splashing your DD, then ask the front desk staff about when they feel the pool is least used... it may be the case that it does not get much use late afternoon/early evening but gets busy after say 7/8pm.

GrimmaTheNome · 28/06/2010 14:57

Our hotel/gym pool has changing table and a playpen in the ladies changing room - the latter very useful to stop escapes while mum is at the knickers and half a bra stage of changing .

Other hotels we've stayed in don't have room to swing a Manx cat, so you might do well to check the facilities first.

suiledonne · 28/06/2010 14:57

Definitely take her swimming. The hotel leisure centre might even have a little kids pool.

We are just back from a few days in a hotel. I took dd1 (4) and dd2 (19 months) swimming twice on my own.

There was a travel cot in the changing room so I popped dd1 in a poncho towel while I changed dd2 and then put her in the cot. When dd1 was changed I put her in too to entertain dd2 while I got myself ready.

The changing room was quite warm so I wasn't cold while getting the others ready.

It worked out so well that we are joining a leisure centre at our local hotel for a couple of months as the public one has no kids pool and isn't much cheaper.

Enjoy your holiday.

ValiumtheConqueror · 28/06/2010 15:13

OMG, go! We deliberately book hotels with pools so that our girls can swim in them, and have done since they were a few months old, and they are much less busy than other pools. Plus, it's something to while away the time until the wedding/party that we are going to starts

We're members of our local hotel's swimming pool. DD and I have been going regularly for the past year (she's 21 months now).

It actually works out cheaper to go there than to the council run sports centre. The hotel is clean, changing rooms are big enough although I wish they had more lockers and the pool is a reasonable size. I've had to pay for her separately since she was 18 months, which I think is a bit young.

The council run sports centre is v expensive and the changing rooms are filthy. The last time we went there they'd temporarily swapped over the male and female changing rooms (something to do with school swimming lessons I believe) and the facilities for babies were awful - a "changing table" with no straps and a playpen covered in black mould. The pool's bigger but it's just not worth it - plus which, what with swimming lessons and parties during the day and swimming club during the evening there's barely any public swimming time left.

DD also does waterbabies so she wears a disposable swimming nappy and a "happy nappy" on top of it which seems to work ok.

bebemoohatessnot · 30/06/2010 11:28

We went and it was grand. There was a separate 'family' changing room which had one of those 'strap in' seats to hold her while I put on my clothes.

....it also had a drain in the floor which came in super handy when I stripped her off to put on her swimsuit and she toddled off and peed right into it... Thank goodness for small favors
