To think the neighbours should keep their cats out of my house?

Our next door neighbour (who we get on with really well), has 4 cats who seem to like spending most of their time either sat on our conservatory roof, sitting on our car bonnet, digging up our flower border, or (most delightfully) crapping at the end of our garden.

In the warm weather, we've obviously had windows and doors open, and their latest trick is venturing into the house and scaring the living daylights out of me.

Last night we heard a strange noise in our bedroom so DH pulled back the curtains to find a cat sat inside on the window-sill (have never seen DH jump so high). Just now I've come into our lounge to find one asleep in my brand new moses basket (baby due in a couple of weeks).

Is there anything I can do to stop them coming in, or should the neighbour take some responsibility for stopping them breaking and entering?!? It's too hot to keep all the windows shut.

Buy a water pistol and get squirting. They'll soon learn.

Take a water pistol to them. There is nothing the neighbours can realistically do tbh but you can squirt them with water. Will soon stop them.

What do you want the neighbours to do though?

Totally appreciate how much of a pain in the bum it is for you, but I'm not sure if they can actually take any practical measures to stop a cat jumping in through your open window.

Water pistols definitely the way to go.

Shut the door? Not being sarcastic we have the same problem, our neighbours two cats keep coming in our house. They used to mess in my flower garden and I bought some scaredy cat plants which seemed to do the trick. They still lay down and sleep under the hedge on our lawn but I don't mind as long as they don't crap on it. Also used to them coming in our house now, they saunter in whenever the door's open, I normally catch them on the way down the stairs I think they find it amusing watching me shout and roar at them to get out.

We had the same problem in our old house - if we left the patio doors open cat(s) would come in and go upstairs and scare the life out of me. I was fed up with the cat poo in our garden and nothing stopped them. It was one of the reasons we moved - bit extreme though

I don't really know what I expect him to do - there's no way I can shut all the doors and windows in this heat so I'd better find my water pistol!

I went round this morning after last night's intrusion to let him know about our visitor and he said "Oh just grab them by the scruff of the neck and sling them out the window"! I presume he didn't mean the first floor window which is where the cat was actually sat.

We're really not bothered about them frequenting the garden but finding one shedding hairs and god knows what else in my moses basket has really annoyed me.

your neighbourhoods can't do anything really but a water pistol definitely works. make sure you are fairly close though when squirting to ensure you really get them.

FakePlasticTrees · 23/06/2010 19:42

you can get something called scoot to spray in the boarders and round the doors, they hate it (BIL had an issue with neighbour's cat using the gravel on his drive as a massive litter tray, it really worked). you can get it at DIY shops/garden centres etc, think I saw sainsburys have an own brand version that might work.

Or the local zoo often sell lion poo for this reason, mix it in the garden, scares the cats away and is good compost for the flowers.

you def need a cat net for the moses basket in case they do get in when you have the baby.

ravenAK · 23/06/2010 19:44

Water pistol, definitely.

I ended up getting rid of my moses basket because my cats loved it so much. They never actually attempted to get in with ds, but the cat hair was grim.

Our neighbour's cat drives us mad, it won't do its business in her garden...it does it all in ours. Digs up the vegetables etc etc. She of course finds it cute that it likes being in our garden and talks about how well behaved it is never going in her's etc. And people say dogs are anti-social!

firsttimemum77 · 23/06/2010 22:01

I have a 'cat problem' too - have bought two pump action water guns! FANTASTIC! Scares the shitting hell out of the cats!

tinkletinklelittlestar · 23/06/2010 22:07

Water pistol best thing immediately but lion poo/plants for long term. YANBU to be annoyed about the cats - I would be mortified if my 2 cats were causing trouble for my neighbours. Years ago I left a patio door open and a big ginger cat came in and stole a sausage from my plate that I'd left in the kitchen - cheeky bugger I was saving it for my two moggies!
