second hand toys

I am 9 and a half weeks pregnant and have started looking at nursery furniture, baby essentials etc to help us budget for what we need to get. Was looking at the price of some of the toys, for example a fisher price rainforest swing and its anywhere between £54.99 and £64.99 depending where you buy it from. Noticed you can buy a second hand one from ebay for a fraction of the price and its fully washable so I suggested to DH that there are a few things on our list that maybe we could buy secondhand as they are all washable and it would save us money for the more expensive nursery items. DH seemed really shocked that I would want to buy secondhand toys and suggested we just bite the bullet and buy brand new ones. AIBU to think if something is fully washable (the swing is just one example) you can get it secondhand and just clean it when you get it?

Freecycle, freecycle, freecycle (as previous poster mentioned). Brilliant for toys, bit of Jif on em (or Cif now!) and like new.

We've got little table and chair, baby walker, hundreds of little cars etc etc etc! Then when you're finished, post them back up and someone else can use them.

There are some things I'd definitely buy new though, cot mattress, car seat etc etc.

I think 2ndhand things are healthier for babies because they dont give off that chemical smell new things have. Also I don't like to think of my DCs using things made by child labourers in the 3rd world. 2ndhand is much more ethical.

I bought my dgs that FP swing and he hated it!!In the end it was never used and my dd sold it at an NCT sale for £20 [it was new].

ebay...charity shop..car boot ...freecycle....

why would anyone buy new (unless for a present?)??

Got loads of stuff from NCT sales for ds. Now am unexpectedly pregnant after disposing off all the baby stuff so have been dropping massive hints around my friends whose babies are growing out of stuff.

it's all washable and if it's smoke free and works well then it's fine. They are hideously expensive and only used for a short while.
