I took it out to clean it, it was on my fingertip and now it has vanished. I have been on my hands and knees with my nose practically touching the carpet and I still can't find it.

Its on your body, its stuck to your clothes on the way down. Happens every time.

lilac21 · 19/06/2010 12:41

I looked there too!

iMum · 19/06/2010 12:44

I lost mine last night too from finger to pot and poof it was gone!

pippop1 · 19/06/2010 12:50

They are flying saucers and can float further than you can possibly imagine!

BalloonSlayer · 19/06/2010 12:58

They are always miles away from where you think even if you think you saw them hit the ground.

Get a little torch and shine it around and you may catch the glint of it.

If it's a soft lens you may probably forget about it though, it will be shrivelled and unsanitary!

SoBloodyTired · 19/06/2010 14:03

This happened to me once. Unfortunately I was (in this case literally) blind drunk and I subsequently spent a considerable period of time trying to peel my cornea off. I looked like a rabbit with myxomatosis the next day.

lilac21 · 19/06/2010 14:18

Aha, found it! I have put it in to soak in some saline as it was like a miniature frisbee. Will it recover, do you think, or should I bin it? They are monthly, extended-wear lenses and I should have been wearing it continuously until July 11th!

scrab806ble · 19/06/2010 14:25

Sometimes I miss wearing lenses, and then I read threads like this one...

lukewarmcupoftea · 19/06/2010 14:30

SoBloodyTired - I'm glad I'm not the only one who has done that! Was too drunk to remember taking them out, so spent half an hour the next morning just stabbing my eyes basically. The rest of the day I looked like some kind of creature from the dead, with a pale sickly face and weeping bloodshot eyes. V embarrasing in front of the rest of the wedding party...

chipmonkey · 19/06/2010 14:37

Not saline, it won't disinfect it. Do you have any cleaning/soaking solution?

Oblomov · 19/06/2010 14:58

how do you get on with continuous wear lenses, please.
do you take them out regularly within the month and clean them as some suggest you are supposed to ?

Oblomov · 19/06/2010 15:01

i only ask becasue i hate wearing glasses. hate putting lenses in aswell. i only put them in once a month or so. i really want just to put one in and forget about it. i can't afford the permanent lenses at £3k each. and i am a bit too frightened for laser surgery. as a diabetic i think its not recommended.

lilac21 · 19/06/2010 15:06

oblomov, I was assessed for laser surgery but am not suitable. Extended wear lenses are the next best thing! I rarely take them out, except to clean them when I can tell they need it. I have regular check ups and my eyes are very healthy, even after wearing lenses for nearly 30 years (and that includes around 15 years with hard lenses, before I switched to gas permeable and then extended wear).

I use comfort eye drops when I first wake up, otherwise they are not comfortable, but apart from that I love reading in bed without glasses and being able to see when I wake up in the morning.

OP posts:
Downdog · 19/06/2010 15:33

oh they do - that is their nature. ANd why is it alays when you've got one in & one out & glasses aer out of reach & you don't want to move until its found so you have to do it one eyed! I lost a new monthly earlier this week. am on last pair now. better order some more online.

Oblomov · 19/06/2010 15:33

thank you lilac. maybe i should give them a try. i've heard people say that 'Bausch & Lomb' are posh = good. but do you think that my local specsavers are worth asking ?
what do you use ? what are the best ? what do i need to know ?
thanks

Oblomov · 19/06/2010 15:35

the other thing is that i am short sighted. need them for tv, driving, computer work. i am guessing you are long sighted based on the reading and seeing in the morning.

Oblomov - I have had extended wear lenses from Specsavers for quite a few years now without any problems whatsoever. I love them and wouldnt be without them. I used to hate all the faffing about with daily contact lenses and, like the OP, would often lose one. Once I accidently put two in one eye and couldnt understand why I a) couldnt see and b) couldnt find either lens

Oblomov · 19/06/2010 16:39

thanks jazz. laugh at hope. we will never know. in with all the odd socks, presumably !!

lilac21 · 19/06/2010 20:56

Mine are from specsavers too, I think about £15 a month (no solutions included). I am very short-sighted at -6. I can only read without them if the book is practically touching my nose!

Hope for the best, it had tucked itself between the edge of the carpet and the skirting board, obviously quite determined not to be found!

Ciba Vision Focus Night and Day are the best IMO. They have a higher oxygen permeablity than Bausch and Lomb Purevision, don't deposit as easily and most of my patients find them more comfy.

I am not crazy about extended wear lenses generally as I don't like the idea of people swimming and showering in them as contact lenses and tap water are not a good mix IMO and if you were to take them out each time you had a shower it takes the joy out of it!

JonahB · 19/06/2010 22:27

Lilac, I'm probably not telling you anything that you don't already know (u've been wearing lenses 10 yrs longer than me), but i've learnt from many a drunk bitter experience that when i drop a lens, I dont move an inch. I go through this process of rubbing all my clothes down to see if its flown there, then drop down to the floor and peer all around me. Not helped cos I'm really really blind (-10) so my nose is about 2 inches away from the floor I'm glad i'm usually alone when i have to go through this humiliating process cos I must look like a total nutter!!

pippop1 · 19/06/2010 23:47

I heard of someone that lost on in a plate of spaghetti......in a restaurant.

I lost one (gas permeable) on my honeymoon in India and was too vain to wear my glasses so spent the rest of the time with one eye closed when I wanted to see the sights. Happy days.

legspinner · 20/06/2010 11:04

Glad you found your lens OP!
A few months ago I lost my gas-permeable contact lens, at the top of the steps leading to our house, in the dark, in a galeforce wind (a tree branch had poked into my eye). Didn't rate my chances, but did what you do jonah, stood still and yelled for DS to bring a torch! After 10 mins of him and me looking I gave up. Next morning I was on the phone asap to order a replacement one.
But then, to my amazement, DH found it. At the top of the steps, where I had dropped in, 12 hours later and still with a galeforce wind.....and it was fine after a good clean, not even scratched , and no dogs had eaten it. Here's where I hope that my DCs inherit DH's eyes, not mine!
