OP, you just have to accept collateral damage sometimes ... You've done all you can, it seems. You can't know for sure whether your renegade member has had a personal disaster, is in hospital, has died or gone to prison!

I don't know the backstory here (don't want/need to) but think you'll have to give up on the books.
