qwert - i got married in 1998 and had a chocolate and gold leaf wedding cake for our evening reception, it was yummy

littleducks · 15/06/2010 20:14

Are you inviting kids? is there a pudding as part of the meal?

I would get some much cheap (like supermarket/bakery) cake for child guests if there wasnt a pudding

But go with what you like

my brother did this the other week. made it himself.

went to a really good quality food market and bought one whole hard cheese (lancashire) for bottom layer, a whole stilton-type cheese for second layer and a soft cheese (camembert?) to go on top.

they decorated it with grapes and stuff and had two little mice in wedding outfits on the top.
served it with crackers.
very cute! and my only complaint was that i'm pregnant, so couldn't eat most of it!

(they did have a 'normal' cake as well though....)

yanbu!

QualityTime · 15/06/2010 20:21

Fruitcake and blue cheese is awesome
I say do it witha layer of fruit cake for miserable gets.

jeanjeannie · 15/06/2010 20:25

Do it!

CrankyTwanky · 15/06/2010 20:26

Make your own though because cake companies charge a fortunefor them.

Rollmops · 15/06/2010 20:28

Have the smelling salts [ahem] handy if serving Vieux Boulogne, it beat the infamous Epoisses de Bourgogne hands down. Great idea though!

Habbibu · 15/06/2010 20:32

We had loads of cheese at our wedding, but a chocolate wedding cake - our wedding food was shedloads of cheese, cold meats inc parma ham, smoked venison and salami, fresh bread, and things like tomatoes, pickles, etc. It was utterly fantastic, and friends still talk about it 6 years on...

Picture here is nayone's interested.

Habbibu · 15/06/2010 20:33

if anyone's, I mean!

fifitot · 15/06/2010 20:36

Have 2 cakes. Spend on the cheese one but buy a M and S ready made wedding cake for cake lovers. They are very delicious for bought cake. I got someone to decorate mine - saved a fortune, not getting a bespoke cake. Plus they come in vaiour sizes.

Oblomov · 15/06/2010 20:41

why not ? fab idea. would still provide a very small cake, cheap one and maybe even a very small fruitcake on, in the background ?

pranma · 15/06/2010 20:42

I did a 3 tier chocolate cake for dd's wedding it had dark choc ganache filling and white choc ganache and curls[caraque]on outside.I got recipe from Good Housekeeping and it was amazing.I think cheese sounds yummy but have some uniced fruitcake on the side for the Yorks/Lancs folks [who would also lay claim to apple pie and cheese-either Wensleydale or creamy Lancashire.]

activate · 15/06/2010 20:42

I think that's a grate idea

do you see what I did there?

Sal321 · 15/06/2010 20:42

Will this be after or instead of dessert? I only ask as some people have their cake instead of dessert as a saving (and you do sometimes get people who don't like cheese). We had a croquembouche after dessert as our cake and no one seemed to mind not having a traditional fruit cake. One of our friends had a cheese "cake" as part of her evening buffet - lots was left over though, probably best to get cheese you can freeze afterwards.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/06/2010 20:43

wow

a fab idea

and unusual - def not bu

and even if you were (which you are not) its your wedding so do and have what YOU want

RuralPidyll · 15/06/2010 20:44

Sounds delicious! Reading this thread is making me hungry!

pollydianasmummy · 15/06/2010 20:45

I had this - lots of round cheeses stacked up on each other. Loads of biccies and grapes...

It was very popular and completely eaten that night.

I was surprised by how expensive it was though to do. But worth it.

Sassybeast · 15/06/2010 20:52

I absolutely loath cheese but I think it's a fab idea I'd have a little fruit cake on reserve for fussy arses like me but it's things like this which make weddings memorable

lucky1979 · 15/06/2010 20:54

My cousin did this - it was brilliant AND saved a fortune on the evening buffet as she just needed to put out crackers and a few bits for people who don't like cheese.

GloriaSmut · 15/06/2010 20:58

I detest cheese - well all except Brie - but reckon it could be an interesting option. Get some proper cake in too, though. Even if it is only a small "proper" cake.

deaconblue · 15/06/2010 21:00

ooh the woman off Economy Gastronomy did this - fab idea. You must must must serve fabulous biscuits/bread too though (no jacobs)

mamalovesmojitos · 15/06/2010 21:04

YANBU sounds amazing

GormlessHeart · 15/06/2010 21:11

Had this at DH's cousin's wedding a couple of weekends ago. Was delicious, looked lovely but it was a HOT day and the marquee was boiling and it started to sweat, and then sink! So it was cut early for photos, like a real cake! and hidden away somewhere cool! Brought out all cut up later, after dinner (there was a pud) and dancing. Yumsters. Sadly was a bit tiddly by then so missed most of it...

hannahsaunt · 15/06/2010 21:18

Had this at a wedding last year and it looked beautiful. They had a lot of fun tasting and choosing the cheeses to use and it was beautifully adorned with fruits. Formed part of the evening buffet with lovely crackers, biscuits and oatcakes.

I was glad that they had a regular cake too, though, as I was pg and couldn't partake of any of their selection.
