not to understand why people buy holiday homes

I just don't get it. Pils have a holiday home which they use for 6 weekends a year and occasionally a summer holiday. Why not stay in a lovely hotel or hire a cottage or something.

At least then you're not pricing local people out of the market thereby destroying the life and soul which attracted you to it in the first place and without having to pay 2 mortgages. 2 lots of council tax, bills etc. Why do people do it?

See, I think sarcasm really doesn't work. For I see that I did confess to a sneaking liking for some of her ideas in this post, a week ago

A neighbour (also a friend) is in the process of buying a place in Italy. At the moment she intends to spend about 4-6 months of the year there but I think she'll probably move there permanently within 5 years as she is so passionate about the area, has spent lots of time there already and she is of retirement age.

Another friend is seriously contemplating buying a place on a Greek island. She wants to retire there (about 15 years away) but thinks its an investment in the meantime as she can rent it out to friends and family. Not sure she'll go through with it though
