to not want to lie on a job application form?

Applying for a job above my current grade (hoping my other skills will compensate!), and one of the requiremtnts is a current UK driving license.

I am taking lessons and hope to pass in the next month or so, way before I would be starting the job should I get it.

DH thinks that as I am already taking a chance applying for a grade above I shouldn't add any other undesirables to the form, and should tick the yes box for driving license. In other words, lie.

I would feel distinctly uncomfortable doing this... what's the MN verdict?

I would tick yes, but explain elsewhere that you are about to take your test.

azazello · 14/06/2010 20:57

Can you tick yes and explain somewhere it is a provisional licence and include your test date?

toastandmarmiterocks · 14/06/2010 20:58

what if you don't pass your test? I wouldn't lie, I wouldn't want to tempt fate and end up failing my test! If you get found out lying it will look far worse than taking a chance applying for a grade above. Can you not contact them later once you have secured your full driving license?

azazello · 14/06/2010 20:58

Sorry, should have added - if you can't explain test date etc I think you should tick 'no'.

Plumm · 14/06/2010 21:00

Is driving essential to the job? If so I wouldn't lie but explain that you have your test next month. If it's not essential then i don't see what difference it makes.

GormlessHeart · 14/06/2010 21:02

Yes lying looks far worse indeed!

don't have a test date yet but might tick yes and then explain elsewhere... thanks ladies

Driving is essential, yup

really underqualified for this one, but I'm getting desperate!

Your DH is BU

If the driving licence is a requirement of the job (as you have stated in your OP), then I'm afraid you need to state you only have a provisional licence (and your test date, if there is room). You have no guarantee of passing your driving test, so it would be foolish to declare anything other than the truth.

LittleMissHissyFit · 14/06/2010 21:10

Thing is a provisional licence IS a UK licence.

Tick the box and put in the box for any other info that your test is on such and such a date.

lovechoc · 14/06/2010 21:17

your DH is BU. You should be ticking 'no' - then once you have passed your driving test you inform the company that you are qualified with a full licence.

lovechoc · 14/06/2010 21:19

a provisional doesn't mean anything really - people want to know you have full licence, that's all they care about.

good luck with the test and also with the job!

LittleMissHissyFit · 14/06/2010 21:31

It means more than a licence say from Ougadougo...

She can tick the box and write Provisional, Test date xx-xx-xx. She is not lying.

blueshoes · 14/06/2010 21:42

Agree it is fine to put provisional licence and driving test date. The implications should be clear to the prospective employer.

It might take you out of the running, it might not. Good luck.

paisleyleaf · 14/06/2010 21:50

I think you need to tick 'no' then explain elsewhere.

GormlessHeart · 15/06/2010 13:26

I ticked yes and put down that it was a provisional, with a view to pass in the next month. I just couldn't tempt fate by saying I had a full license!

Doubt I'll get it but can't help but try. It's an extremely rural and remote job so I'm hoping they will have few candidates!
