to be considering reporting someone for tax avoidance

A friend of a friend, who I have known for years but have never become close to, has been self employed for about 15 years since having kids.
She is a private tutor. I have recently found out from my friend that she has NEVER registered as self employed and doesn't pay tax.
She earns about 30K, her kids go to private school and they have a really nice lifestyle (she shops at Jigsaw, Jaeger, etc).
I am absolutely fuming, esp as I am also self employed and would never consider doing something like this.
What would you do?

How on earth is that ever going to work??? I am that a charitable organisation would do that and think they will get away with it.

This is why gossip is dangerous. I think it's wrong to report someone based on hearsay and I also think there's an element of jealousy here. So what if her kids go to private school and she buys clothes in nice shops? You have no idea what her real financial arrangements are. She could be living off credit for all you know or her husband could be making a lot of money, maybe her family are wealthy? Maybe she over embellished to her so called 'friend' who has been gossiping about her about how well she's doing?

What was the OP friends motivation for telling her this information? Would someone really tell someone all about their earnings and tax evasion?

Getting the authorities involved in something based on hearsay can ruin lives and I say this as someone who believes we should all pay the correct level of tax.

Just curious - the people talking about how dreadful it is to be a "grass" where do you draw the line?

Are you still a grass if you shop someone for:

Mugging someone
Child abuse
Murder
Stealing money from an employer
Stealing money from a little old lady
Rape
Loan sharking
Drug dealing
Playing loud music at night

Or is there a form of sliding scale which you apply?

Where do you draw the line? Or is it all absolutely none of your business so you keep your noses out?

Mumofthree- there are a number o variations on the charity giving to save tax scam (as opposed to the relief you get for genuine donations) and can't believe it won't be long before this gets shut down as I know hmrc are on record as being aware of and cracking down on others.

Stay out of it and leave it to karma to deal with.

capricorn76 · 16/06/2010 13:03

@Lucky1979. I personally have no problem whatsoever with grassing but only if I had my facts straight, not based on the word of someone else who may be exaggerating or even lying.

mumofthreesweeties · 16/06/2010 14:04

Poppy and Mingg from what I gather they have several people on their 'books' so to speak. She was boasting about how much money she is making from this charity. Just cannot believe the ends people will go to to be fraudulent. It is only a matter of time....

Mingg · 16/06/2010 21:55

That is so disgraceful (besides being illegal of course). Charities are meant to use the donations received for the purpose they are given not to use them to harvest money from the government. I wonder how these amount are shown in their books.

I do hope it is only a matter of time and they all get criminal records...

Grass them up, have you tried to via hmrc website, they want to know so much, you would think you are doing them a favour and could stay annon, you can't stay annon I don't think. How do you "grass" on them, I have loads on ebay that are fiddling!

ButchyRestingFace · 31/10/2017 09:18

Dan007, fully seven years hence, the OP’s chum may just be getting out of HMP Wherever...

Robinkitty · 31/10/2017 09:27

I wouldn't report her and I wouldn't do that because of the children.

Noimbrianfromhull · 31/10/2017 09:29

Zombies on Hallowe'en.

Brilliant!

QuopQuop · 31/10/2017 09:32

I would mind my own business and leave her to it. It isn't any of your business what she does. Leave her alone and get on with your life!
