..I made my dd's birthday cake (which I love doing, no judgement if you would rather buy a shop one it's just I enjoy it)
..I painted my toenails (which takes about 10 mins)

I'm lucky I only work part time but I get fed up with being told I have too much time on my hands because I choose to do something nice for myself (painting my frickin nails not going for week at a spa) or doing something for my daughter/family.

Is it just bitter people who don't have time or inclination who make these comments, why demean other people's efforts like that?

who is commenting?

I work part time, have one preschooler but once she is at school with ds I'm not goign abck full time, oh no!

Enormarse · 14/06/2010 10:37

Other mums (who also work part time although more hours than me).

They might not have meant anything with the comments, could just have been lighthearted smalltalk?

If not, well, it's got bugger all to do with anyone whether you do your nails or not!

You'll have to give them some MN advice and tell them to get a life and worry about something worth worrying about

Enormarse · 14/06/2010 10:56

I know what you mean about small talk but looking at something someone has done and saying 'you have too much time on your hands' is just crap in my opinion!!

Ignore them!

GypsyMoth · 14/06/2010 10:58

'other mums' are te work of the devil....ignore them!!

Linnet · 14/06/2010 11:05

I remember my granny commenting on how I must be neglecting my newborn dd2 because I had painted my toenails. I pointed out that dd2 did sleep and there were all sorts of things I managed to do while she was asleep including my nails.

Nyx · 14/06/2010 11:07

They sound jealous because you're doing your own baking and making an effort to keep yourself looking nice...I would ignore them. It really is such a put-down, I would only say that someone had too much time on their hands if I saw them, oh I don't know, building an elaborate house of cards while at work or something.

Pattie16 · 14/06/2010 11:22

I work one day a week, but I am P.A. for all in the house, eg, I clean shoes, sew, cook, taxi, school matters, vet visits, doctors, hospital, beds, house work, garden, shopping etc. Is this fair?

OTTMummA · 14/06/2010 11:29

they're just jealous, im jealous lol, i wish i could paint my toenails!
although i always find time for baking i just end up going to bed gone 1am lol.

foureleven · 14/06/2010 11:35

I'd say something like this, partly as a flippant remark, partly cause Im jealous that some other mums have this time.. But Id openly say its cause Im jealous and i wouldnt really expect the other person to be offended. If youre secure with your choices about how you live your life why would an off the cuff remark like this bother you?

You get to paint your toenails and bake, I get to work full time and earn lots of my own money and be all smug about it.

Some people just have rude peculiar senses of humour, plus we're all a bit jealous of eachother.. water off a ducks back no?

Enormarse · 14/06/2010 11:40

Fair point foureleven. I'm not losing sleep over it, it just irritates me. I am secure with my choices. Just think it's a rather churlish comment to make.

One of your skills is time management - One of theirs is rudeness!
