to expect coach drivers not to smoke

GoEngland · 12/06/2010 10:38

Background: DD has just returned from a school day trip and has told me that they had to wait outside the coach whilst the driver finished smoking inside the coach. As the DC in question are 12+ they did ask why he was smoking and the teachers told him that they had special ventilation .
AIBU to expect better from teachers/school, like refusing to get on the coach.

The coach driver shouldn't have been smoking on the coach, but not sure what you wanted from the teachers? Maybe they asked the driver to stop smoking and he wouldn't, or they made the children wait a while before getting on the coach so it could air out?

Bunnyjo · 12/06/2010 22:18

Oops smokefree, not smookefree ... This is their website should you require any additional information

rockinhippy · 12/06/2010 22:22

Disagreeing on the subject matter....fine..........as you say, that is the nature of AIBU......, but the subject matter, is NOT anything to do with the accuracy of spelling or grammar...........

but for the record....in different circumstance, news paper, book etc..... then I share that pet hate & more besides......but in a forum situation like this, I find that type of nit picking, elitist, bullying & potentially racist.......

At very least it's not very kind.......because it gives no thought as to WHY someone may not spell correctly, or use the correct grammar....& I am sure there are MANY reasons......many not just ignorance.....

nor does it allow for the fact that some people may prefer not to feign airs & graces, & allow themselves to feel superior by attempting to belittle others & in this sort of relaxed forum setting, type as they speak.....it does not always mean we are not capable....... & even if it did, why on earth is it okay to put someone down for that........IMO it says FAR more about the person obvious social inadequacy of the person feeling the need to attack in that way....than it ever does the attacked

clemettethecoalitionbreaker · 12/06/2010 22:30

Racist?? Oh my.

tethersend · 12/06/2010 22:31

This has been discussed ad nauseum on here, rockinhippy.

I don't think it warranted a troll accusation, do you?

tethersend · 12/06/2010 22:33

Shit, I missed the racist bit...

...please elaborate, rockinhippy.

If you are going to criticise teachers on a thread with teachers on it, expect the red pens to come out.

Oh {grin} I get it now, VH is a Teacher, & took ofence at my expressing surprise that no-one stood up to the Driver.......... I did think it was a bit odd to say the least, as it had no bearing on the OPs post, & was just an out & out attack on my writing style & mistakes, hence why I thought it was out & out antagonistic for the sake of it.....so Troll obviously came to mind

in which case, appologies for the Troll remark, but IGTBH I do find the response pretty childish...& I would of thought a Teacher would of been far less judgmental & understanding..... after all, I'm sure you teach all nature of abilities, nationalities, & disabilities

you didn't Tethered.........I just meant that someone who writes with poor spelling or grammar, is just as likely to have ESL, as they are to be ill educated...

I'll shut up now...lol

clemettethecoalitionbreaker · 12/06/2010 22:43

would have

rockinhippy · 12/06/2010 22:49

oh deer, did'nt realize I stumbled into the forum equivilent off th Sonday Tymes.........

violethill · 13/06/2010 01:13

ROFL - using language correctly is clearly racist isn't it!

Oh dearie me! I want my children to be taught by teachers who can speak and write accurately and who can cope sensibly and without over reaction or hysteria when faced with other adults who don't know how to behave professionally. It sounds as though the teachers on the trip dealt with the matter with as little outward fuss as possible, the children all returned safely home - and the teachers are doing another trip on Monday according to the OP! All power to them I say! I await Monday evening's thread where the OP will no doubt have more earth shattering revelations to tell us!

bruxeur · 13/06/2010 03:11

Are thick people a separate race now?

EricNorthmansmistress · 13/06/2010 08:13

I think she was pointing out that people may spell incorrectly or use incorrect grammar because they have english as a second language. Hence the suggestion that deriding someone for poor spelling or grammar could be potentially racist.

rockinhippy · 13/06/2010 08:32

Violet...... I have every faith that my own DDs Teachers would have upheld their "duty of care" & dealt with any similar situation..... with just as little fuss, whilst at the same time quietly reminding the Driver of his LEGAL responsibility.....as I know my Aunt, Uncle, Mother & several friends would also have done

You seem to have taken my support of the OP as an attack on the Teaching Profession in General, which to be honest makes absolutely no sense, & couldn't be further from the Truth.

I have EVERY respect for Teachers, & I am not expressing my opinion by way of some sort of "lets get the Teacher" vendetta? simply saying that the driver was indeed breaking the law, & if the OPs account of events is accurate, then I'm surprised that as Professionals, who you are no doubt obviously all too aware, are bound by so much red tape & restrictive rules & Parents who sometimes CAN be anti Teacher......that they let it go so easily

& no, as you very well know, using language correctly isn't racist .........BUT picking holes in the spelling, grammar or writing style, of any poster you personally know nothing about, without intention may well end up being EXACTLY that....... I speak French, but like many SL I would struggle to be 100% accurate in written French

Not that its any of your business, but by way of clarifying that point, my own often poor grammar, spelling, typing errors or use of dots & small paragraphs to break up my texts into chunks that my brain can handle & I can see more clearly, are all down to a health issue that along with other symptoms frequently affects my hands, my eyes & my cognitive ability

Therefore as a Teacher, I do hope you are FAR more understanding & thoughtful towards any ESL, Dyslexic, Autistic, & so on & so forth pupils that come under your care, than you are to strangers on here....... at very least, its not a nice personality trait

Picking holes in the actual text of replies, simply because they do not agree with your own opinion, IMHO is extremely low & I could if I wanted to (which I don't) argue that any poster choosing that route, does so, not just out of pedantry, but out of lack of any solid argument to support their own views

Unless of course you were one of the Teachers concerned .....then your attitude might make more sense

EricNorthmansmistress · 13/06/2010 08:40

See my DH's spelling and grammar is laughable. He would be quite upset if called 'thick' for it though. As might a person with dyslexia, or learning difficulties, or simply poor education.

violethill · 13/06/2010 08:41

Oh dear god.......
no doubt the school did register a complaint after the trip - the OP actually has no evidence that they didn't; she's just got her knickers in a twist because she's bored the teachers didn't refuse to get onto the bus, cause a massive hold up waiting for a replacement coach, and have all the children arrive back several hours later than scheduled, causing untold anxiety all round. Although of course, had the teachers taken that course of action, she'd be straight on here complaining!

Anyway, her kid apparently has another trip tomorrow - so I await the thread starting 'My child has far too many school trips, AIBU to expect far better from the teachers.....'

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 13/06/2010 09:08

How is criticising the action of some teachers seen as criticising teachers in general?

MrsC2010 · 13/06/2010 10:05

Feign airs and graces by using correct spelling and grammar? Now that is a concept I haven't heard of before!

rockinhippy · 13/06/2010 11:58

PMSL....I'm loving the way snippets of my text are C&P "ad nauseum" & deliberately out of context

& you'll be wondering why I'm now also adding "sock puppet" to my thoughts on certain replies to this thread

toniguy · 13/06/2010 12:14

I know MrsC2010!

Those dratted teachers who insist on teaching my kids correct spelling and grammar. How I wish they would stop being so hoity toity and come back down to earth and teach them things that are wrong ROFL

In School it's a great thing that you all do & I'm sure much appreciated, by all but the most idiotic of parents

But out of School??, in situations like this, when no-one is requesting help .......smacks of been darn right rude to me

Its a good job the rest of us mere mortals don't presume our professions give us the right to be so openly critical of our fellow human beings, or maybe I'd be stopping you in the street & letting you know just how badly dressed you are

toniguy · 13/06/2010 12:29

I am not a teacher rockinhippy but I'm sure all the teachers on here will be so dreadfully upset by your criticism of all teachers' dress sense..... not!

rockinhippy · 13/06/2010 12:42

again deliberately twisted & taken out of context......some people really do need to get a life

& for the OP, as said earlier, YANBU....nor did I read your post as getting your knickers in a twist, simply asking a very reasonable question....

in the same circumstance, due to being prone to travel sickness & the smell of cigarette smoke aggravating that, my own DD would very likely of become ill.........even as an adult, my SIL cannot ride in a car or bus with the smell of cigarettes, without becoming very ill, so you were right to question this

fembear · 13/06/2010 12:46

rockinhippy you are being absurd. I don't have one set of grammar rules for 'in school' and another set for 'out of school'. I learnt things at school and manage to apply them in the real world. That was the the whole idea. What did you think school was for?

fembear · 13/06/2010 12:48

"would very likely of"
