In thinking it's a bit cheeky to use someone's dustbin?

Earlier today a car pulls up, woman jumps out and opens back door. She takes various bits of rubbish from small child, turns round, walks towards my house and throws it in my dustbin. I think that she was a bit bloody cheeky! There's a street rubbish bin opposite.

Now obviously I'm glad she didn't just throw the rubbish on the floor, but surely you just take your rubbish home and put it in your own bin don't you?

AIBU In thinking she was cheeky? I was on the phone to a friend at the time and she wanted me to go and shout at her!

OP - I don't think YABU, I don't understand the first half of this thread where people think it's OK to dump their rubbish on someone else. Yes, it's not the biggest problem in the world, but if someone was continually dumping their rubbish into our bins thn I would have a word.

Mishy1234 · 11/06/2010 05:59

YANBU

It's extremely rude and really quite odd to come into someone's garden and dump your rubbish in their bin. I wouldn't do it if I was walking past, let alone actually stop my car. I agree, she should have taken it home with her or used a public bin.

anyabanya · 11/06/2010 07:16

YANBU, i think. Especially in places where people pay by weight for their rubbish. (Don't get me started on that one). Somebody coming into your garden is trespass anyway.

We have our bins out the back, near a little road, and people keep putting their bags of dog crap on top of the bin, but the bin men will not take it as they are resting on the top of the black bags and not IN the black bags, so I have had to clear this sort of shit up and it really annoys me. Now I have started hiding our bins to prevent it. silly.

ChippingIn · 11/06/2010 07:28

YANBU

I am flabbergasted at how many people think this is ok?? Even those that say they would do it if they were walking - what you ouldn't cross the road to put it in the public bin or shock horror, carry it until you find one - dropping it in the street is not the only alternative!

Rude, really rude.

Helenwombat - what a sense of entitlement you and your Mum have - why should others have bins for your convenience? I hope you at least wash your recycling stuff before dumping it on someone else!

pigsinmud · 11/06/2010 08:22

Helenwombat - I would be extremely annoyed if you put your recycling in my recycling bin. Our bins are emptied on alternate weeks and our recycling bin is totally full. If you came along and used it, I wouldn't be able to get my own rubbish in. Surely you're using it with the owner's permission? My recycling bin is more full than the rubbish bin.

Anyabanya -that's awful. I can't believe the laziness of some people. We had a used disposable nappy left on top of our bin once, that was bad enough.

YABU

I just don't see what the problem is

Mingg · 11/06/2010 10:05

"people keep putting their bags of dog crap on top of the bin" - I did this the other week , not on top of the bin mind you the bin was empty and on the road so not in anyone's garden or even next to anyone's garden. Some guy game out and started yelling at me for dumping my dog shit in his bin...

Mingg · 11/06/2010 10:06

came even double

it is cheeky!

Mingg · 11/06/2010 10:10

Actually ours are collected weekly and it was the collection day

IamBatman · 11/06/2010 10:15

if someone did that to me I would be annoyed too.
it wouldn't affect me in any way i.e no fines for incorrect items in bin, no charge for weight, but I would still be a bit about why she couldn't just keep on driving and put it in her own bin.

IamBatman · 11/06/2010 10:17

Mingg thats mingging

Mingg · 11/06/2010 10:42

Batman - I am not in the habit of using other people's bins. However on that particular day there was a bin on the road that as far as I could tell belonged to no one and I knew it was going to be emptied the same day (in fact sometime within the next 2 hours). I admit being embarrassed about it and got verbally abused for it too.

minipie · 11/06/2010 10:50

YANBU

Our binmen won't take away any "loose" bits of rubbish i.e. that are not in a black bag.

So if someone dumps some bits in our bin they will get left by the binmen and just sit and fester (or worse, end up scattered over the garden).

Morloth · 11/06/2010 11:07

Is this bad? I often put rubbish in people's bins if I am walking past and I have it in my hand, I thought it was the done thing? My bin often has "extras" in it as we live opposite a school - what is the problem?

Jamieandhismagictorch · 11/06/2010 11:10

We have very few Council, bins round here, and even those get "ignored" by a fair few people, so I'd be pleased if people threw stuff in my bin

Tiredmumno1 · 11/06/2010 11:23

Fgs it was not her bin to put rubbish in. some people only have fortnightly collections so imo they need the room in the bin. and putting dog crap in someones bin is disgusting.

take your own rubbish home or find a public bin.

i am really shocked that half of you think its fine, its rude and arrogant!

Morloth · 11/06/2010 11:27

I think it is bizarre to object to rubbish going in a rubbish bin, I honestly can't see the problem.

Dog crap yes, if your bin men won't take loose rubbish yes, if you pay by weight yes. I get all of that but other than that I just can't get my head around it.

Here though you don't enter anyone's yard to do it, we are all in terraces and the bins are in the front, you just reach over the fence, lift the lid and put stuff in, usually just wrappers etc.

How does this inconvenience the owner of the bin? As I said, I live opposite a school and the kids often toss wrappers into our bin, it hadn't occurred to me to be annoyed by this.

Very strange.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 11/06/2010 11:28

Better than dumped on the floor Tiredmum - not ideal, a bit lazy, but better than that. Can't really find it in me to get upset about it

antshouse · 11/06/2010 11:39

That's a bit odd. She went to the trouble of stopping the car just to use your bin! Maybe it the child had been misbehaving and she was following through on an ultimatum.

blackflyinyourchardonnay · 11/06/2010 12:00

YANBU

I'd be a bit irritated, mine is only collected every 2 weeks and (apparently) not at all if the lid isn't flat shut.I need all the space I can get in there and don't have space for someone elses' rubbish!

That said, I often do have other peoples rubbish in there anyways, as I have to pick up all the litter the secondary school kids chuck at my house on the way home
