To think tax credits are utterly bizarre?

Have been claiming tax credits for 21 months since DS was born. First year was fine because I was getting higher maternity pay. Second year was ok, they based on actual projected income rather than the previous year, as I was on unpaid mat leave. Our actual income was even lower as I didn't realise you could disregard mat pay, and DH earned less than expected. So I gave them this year's projected income - twice last year's as well as childcare costs halving.

I expected tax credits to shoot right down and panicked a bit when I read the award which is about 5x what I expected. I called up thinking it was a mistake and worried about an overpayment but no! Apparently they base on last year's income regardless - unless it goes down, but not if it goes up by less than 25k! I feel we are being given money we don't deserve, or need, and the government is completely bonkers! Now we are poor (debts) so this will help by paying it off, and also can put DS in nursery an extra day so DH can work more, but really - what was the government thinking of? This just makes no sense at all.

I also went full time at work and DH part time in order to bring in more cash - and wouldn't have done if I'd known! I could have had an extra day with DS

Its absolutely barmy. If you're a relatively high earner and then loose your job not able to find another one they base your payments on previous year - even though your circumstances are significantly changed. Then the next year you find a job again are just about coping and they up your payments!

Well you can insist they base it on this year's income if this year is less than last year - which is why it's bonkers, because the following year you get payments based on your broke year!

Well I have been paying back an overpayment of £7.92 for the past year. Today I look at my Bank account and noticed they have paid me £5.72. I haven't claimed for over 3 years. Tried to call them today - held on for over 10 mins then realised that the call costs me £1.50 each minute. Which means when they realise they have made a mistake they will not only deduct the £5.72 from my account but I have spent over £15 telling them of their mistake. WTF.

They wrote to me a while ago saying I owe £100. I asked to pay it back in bits. Have never heard a peep since.
